Question Help! Is my meds making the WRONG hair fall out????

HI all-I have been reading here for a short while, but this is my first time posting-hope I am doing it correctly! I have been diagnosed with IR PCOS in April this year. Since April, I have been taking 100mg of Spironolactone and 1500mg a day of Metformin. I am not ttc and will not be again. I had twins 11 months ago and I know it is normal for hair loss (on the head) after a preg and more so after twins-but 11 months later?!?! So, the only thing I can think of is either the IR PCOS is casuing it OR the only new thing is my meds. The meds have helped with other hair problems and my skin, but I want the hair on my head to stay! LOL. Has anyone else experienced hair loss in the wrong areas on these meds? Please amy info or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Jules

Hi,
I've been on Aldactone for 12 years and had great results with the excess facial/body hair, but no change to the hair on my head (which is and has always been thin). Sorry I can't help you, but this should bump up your query.

Good luck.

I really don't think it's the meds.
I think it's your hormones.

Serveral things to consider, Thyrod,IR, FSH,LH forgive me if I get them mixed up. But my hair started coming out by the clumps when I develpoped IR which was about 2yrs after i had my son.
It still took another 2 yrs after that to show on the paper I needed treatment.

Have you had resent blood work done?
Was it borderline?
Do you have a copy of the last tests you had done?

Let me know,

Patty

HI Patty-
I am IR PCOS. That was just recently diagnosed. So, may be the timing of post delivery, the IR PCOS and stress are the causes. I had a lot of blood tests done (in april this year) and that was the only abn. one-the insulin. thyroid, testos., etc all normal. I do not have a copy of them, but I think they said something about one of the abn insulin tests the level was like 30 and shouldn't have been any higher than 23 (???) I really can't rememebr for sure. That is when she started me on Metformin. I have only been on a short time, may be I just need some adjusting time still and that will help. But, I have never had thyroid prob. and have been tested numerous times. So have the others you named-tested numerous times and all fine. Except this was the first time IR was tested with the fasting glucous, etc. I was gestational diabetes-slightly while preg w/twins last year-so may be that is a facotr with being IR now, or I have been for awhile and just never knew. I am rambling-I guess that I have had so much very serious Medical garbage to deal with for the last 10 years-I am getting a little fed up! LOL. Thak you for your reply (and Serena too). Has your hair stopped coming out? If so, was it the meds that helped or something else?

I've been on Gluc XR since Nov with Yasmin.since Feb02

It's not comming out as fast as before but I think I have a special case here.
I have had tenderness to my scalp for well over a year.(A few months before being DX IR) I don't have sores or dandrif or anything like that just extreme tenderness .I cry some days just to brush my hair.
That tenderness goes for the inside of my mouth also. The same mt DX IR I was sent for test for oral cancer because the dentist could not explain why this was happining. That all came back neg and I stumped them too.

I have come to the conclusion it is the IR and my hormones are so out of wack it is effecting my skin as well.
Lucky for me I don't bruise easy.
Strange I know.

Yet know one know what to do yet.

I'm sorry I'm not much help, I thought I would let you know your not alone.

Patty

Patty! I do the same thing. Even 20 minutes ago, I thought that my ccalp felt sore and how weird. Now, I am afraid to brush because of it. Plus, the inside of my mouth gets very sore, esp the roof-to the poibnt it can be very painful just to ches a bite of food. That can come and go and has for a few years. Thank you for sharing that with me. Everyday that I read this board, I feel less alone-tx.

Julie,
i'm so glad to find SOMEONE who knows what I'm talking about.
I actually hit someone at work because they came up behind me and tugged on my hair.Which to me feels like it was pulled.

My hair is down to my butt and it is taking everything not to cut it all off. Right now that is the only thing that I really like about myself and that isn't even in good standing.

Be very careful of chocolate and candy. They will make your mouth more sensitive. If you need a fix go for the icecream above those others. It doesn't react the same. I actually developed an allergic reaction a yr ago . The only thing I could pin it down to was Minite Maide frozen lemonaide soft pops and/or Otis SpunckMayer CC Cookies. As recent as this past Jan I had the Minute Maid and my mouth got very sore and my throat acted like it was swelling up. so no more for me.

No matter what I'm sore and tender, but if I'm careful of what i eat it's not as bad.

good luck with yours,
Patty

Patty, I know what you mean about citrus. I just can't eat/drink it. It hurts my mouth very badly, so now I just usually avoid it. One thing I can drink on occasion if I REALLY want some OJ, is the reduced acid one, that is not too bad for a glass here and there.

Exclamation

Funny you should mention that(OJ)
I have been craving it and just haven't got around to buying any. I haven't put that with my reactions yet so when I do get some, I will watch for it. (I don't have it often)

Thanks,
Patty
