Hi Clare My name is Jodi and I'm 23 as well But I have had coarse chin hair since I was 13 and it got worse it spread to my chest and neck I know you don't want to take the shaving route but I have tried everything from waxing to creams to bleaching but my best found cure yet is shaving with a Venus razor and when you get out of the shower use an astringent it closes the pores from getting dirt in them then, Put Bikini Zone on it it's the best yet you can get it at wal-mart or pretty much anywhere Now as for the blonde hairs on your lips Buy this little electric shaver it called Finishing Touch I love it But I understand the shaving BS that us women have to go through everyday I have to shave my arms, face, chest, and neck it's frustrating but it could be worse good luck

Hi Clare,

Dont shave whatever you do.

Since your hair is still blonde and not completely course, a good depilitory should work for you. Try Magic shave powder with conditioner in the ethnic hair care section of walgreens or cvs...or go to Sally's and look through their choices. There is a really good one that comes in a little tube with blue lettering. I cant remember the name right now.

But whatever you do, dont start shaving and DONT WAX either since waxing can stimulate hair production and blood flow to those areas...just use a good depilatory and you can use it on your neck, chin, upper lip, and cheek.

And meanwhile, while your symptoms are relatively mild start working on getting your hormones under control with natural supplements, diet, and exercise....(and medications as a last resort if all else fails) before your symptoms get worse.

When my symptoms started around age 15- I promised myself I would NEVER shave my face - today at age 29 I never have- I have been so tempted many times when the thought of sitting in front of the mirror and tweezing all that hair just seemed too much to handle- but I stuck it out and tweezed- Tweezing - like waxing- damages the hair foilcle- at first it may make the hair come back as an ingrown hair- but eventually- and it takes a long time- but the foilce will be so damaged it won't be able to produce a hair. That doesn't mean we will ever be hairless because we have soooooo many foilces- but I figure that is one less i have- when you shave it just takes it off at the skin level- same as a hair remover cream- it just melts the surface hair- it doesn't do a thing to the root. I know you said you can't afford any fancy creams - but when you get to where you have more resources- I swear by Vaniqua. It is a cream that goes on 2 times a day - it is just a hair growth inhibitor - it doesn't remove the hair- It is expensive and none of the insurances I have ever haad has covered it. Mine costs about $40-$50.00 a tube. I think a tube is supposed to last only a month- but mine usually last atleast 2 months sometimes more depending on if I used it like I was supposed to or not. But I use it on any place on my face hair wiould grow on man. I also put a little on my eyebrows to help keep my waxing job nice. You are not alone in your struggle with all this hair! It is one of the most trying things for me- it can control me if I let it. I only wish I had this web site 14 years ago the support would have been nice - as I have 3 beautiful - perfectly hairless sisters - and a mother and father who just didn't understand. I have often refered to myself as the ugly duckling- because that is how I felt. I am still working on being that beautiful swan!

I have the fuzzy hair all over my face... it's horrible. I just ignore it because I have so many other things... hairloss, acne, overweight that it's become last on my list. My BF even commented on it - not in a nasty way - that I am fuzzy/furry all over with little blonde hairs, although on the sideburn area they are much longer and I feel they would be the most noticeable. I felt quite stressed and embarassed when he said that, but he didn't mean it in a nasty way. It just made me go red in the face because I hadn't thought it was that big of a deal that people would actually notice it!! I think the creams would definitely be best if you wanted to remove it... I did do that once or twice but couldn't keep it up.

That's what I recommend too. I have long blond hairs all over my face--some of them near my hairline are nearly an inch long! They're still soft but very visible when long, so I use that little trimmer and it's awesome! Creams irritate my face but this just trim the hairs to a normal length. Everyone has hair on their face, so I like that it makes me look normal instead of hairless.

Oh, and I got mine at a drug store for about $10.

I just started using this stuff called surgi creme on my face and neck. My hair was blonde but getting longer and I wasn't going to wait until it got any darker. Just do not leave it on as long as it says I have been "burning" my face. Although its been taking care of those zits that won't go away.

One cyster said Majic Cream Powder this stuff is a wonderful thing. You can use it anywhere and it doesn't cause those aweful little bumps.

Good Luck and Welcome

Default Myth

It's a myth about shaving causing your hair to grow thicker and/or stimulating the hair follicle. That is totally not true. Shaving is a good alternative compared to the harm repeated depilatories and tweezing can do to your delicate chin area.

Lightbulb Here comes the science!

Please read the following in-depth article about hair and hair removal options from the American Academy of Family Physicians:
http://www.aafp.org/afp/20021115/1907.html

Notice what they say about shaving. "Shaving does not change the thickness or growth rate of human hair"

They do mention, however that it can produce a "blunt" tip to the hair making it feel thicker or more harsh. This is true, but in my experience it's not much of a difference. Certainly not enough to make up for the convenience of shaving! None of my "peach fuzz" has turned darker or coarser. You can't even feel that as it grows in. It's only the coarse "manly hairs" that feel coarse as they grow in.

Plucking: "Unless the hair is plucked in Anagen [phase], the method generally does not change the growth rate of the hair. Plucking during Anagen may shorten the duration of time spent in this phase and, if repetitive, may permanently damage the matrix"

So basically, if you pluck a hair that is in the "growth" phase it may "shorten the time spent in this phase"... whatever that exactly means is difficult to decipher without reading the study that info came from. It could mean it shortens the growth period by a day or by months, there's no further info. I've never experienced it, sadly. I must also have some tough matrix (matrii? what is the plural of matrix??) as mine sure never slowed in 20 YEARS of plucking daily. It only got worse. I shave now. No worsening! That's probably more a function of my PCOS than the hair removal method though.

So, to recap, as Penguinlover states It's a MYTH folks!

So do what ever you prefer, are comfortable with, doesn't give you nasty side effects, and works for you.

Dana

The best way to avoid feeling depressed and to avoid that constant worry as to whether people are seeing facial and neck hair is to shave.

It's totally non-intrusive and unlike waxing/plucking/threading it doesn't cause the hair root to distort and the hair to grow at strange angles. Nor does it have the potential long-term damage to the skin that electrolysis and laser have. In any case, nothing will really stop hormonally-fueled hair growth.

If there were a better answer for facial hair than shaving, then men would be generally using it. If hair growth is very light, then there may be other ways that will work, but where it approaches male levels, then shaving is, in my view, the best answer. I use a men's-type electric shaver. A top-of-range model at about $200, but it's worth it. Quick. Painless. Effective. And once you adjust psychologically to the idea of shaving, it's actually very pleasant.
