Thread: HELP! OBGYN or ENDO

    Default HELP! OBGYN or ENDO

My PCP recommended I see an OBGYN as soon as possible about my symptoms (she thinks I have PCOS). However, after going online and getting more info about PCOS, I am wondering if I should see an ENDO instead. I am 24 (soon to be 25) and while I am not ready to have a baby right now, my husband and I have discussed trying in the next couple of years. So, should I see an OBGYN or an ENDO?

Thank you so much for your help!!

You might want to find a OBGYN, then if you feel you need to see an ENDO have them give you a referral to one. I know I was thinking of going and seeing and ENDO and they told me I need to have my doctor call for a refferal. Its good to have both of them on your medical team. Welcome and Good Luck.

Endos don't only see patients who want to have babies. If your PCP thinks you have symptoms, I'd go ahead and establish a relationship with a good endo for the present and future.

I get the feeling that my female OB/GYN doesn't even believe in PCOS. She was very casual about telling me to stop taking Met when I first got pregnant. Out of fear of miscarrying I stayed on it for a while.

But I came to her years after getting treatment from other doctors. I am no longer on Met after seeing an endo last year who ran a lot of tests on me. But starting out on my PCOS journey I was glad I first went to an endo who is trained in PCOS, unlike OB/GYNs.

    Good luck wherever you go.

Thank you all for your advice. I guess it really depends on the doc, how many patients they have treated with PCOS, and their overall experience. Wish me luck and I will post again after my first apt.

I would see an OBGYN first and then maybe get a referal to an endo! I went to my Gyno first and I wasn't happy with the dx, so I went to an RE even though Im not trying to concieve. I just felt that I need more info and a better dx, Turns out, I do have PCOS, so I am going Monday to discuss where we go from here! I am more pleased now!

If you don't have to have the referral for insurance I would go straight for the endo. My OB GYN did my basic bloodwork and then sent me right to the endo when he saw my issues. It will save time.

i would suggest getting with a ob/gyn first, then an endo if necessary, alot of these brand new female gyns are very good at managing pcos and aren't so close-minded (as the older ones). i myself am starting with a new gyn, she's young and hip and seems ready to help, (i'll know how good she is on the 27th, my first appt.) and ill be seeing an endo a lil later, like they said above, it's good to have them both in your corner. good luck!

I have only ever gone to an ob/gyn for my PCOS. She was willing to refer me to an endo if I had issues TTC after 6 months, but luckily once we figured out my issues and I got on metformin I conceived after 4 months of seeing her (had gone 18 month w/o AF prior to seeing my ob). Later, when you do get pregnant, some work with the endo and ob as a team...so in the long run, both can be helpful.
