Help please! Can I stop taking Yasmin mid-month if....
Hey soulcysters,
I want to stop taking Yasmin ASAP. I don't feel well on the pill and I don't feel at all comfortable with the possible risks associated with taking it. I'm going to be starting Metformin in the next few days and would like that to be the only meds I'm on.
Question: My husband and I had unprotected sex on Thursday night. It's Saturday night. If I stop taking the Yasmin today (as in I don't take tonight's pill) is there any chance of becoming pregnant from sperm that may still be alive or is that absurd? I realize that my odds of becoming pregnant even off the pill are probably not so great, but I wanted to be sure. Advise please!
Not sure what you ended up doing but I wanted to say that no, it's not absurd, as sperm can live for 5 days inside the vagina. Also it would depend where abouts in the pill cycle you were. If it was at the beginning of the pack, you could very likely ovulate and so get pregnant, but if it was in the last week, or last few days of the pack, you would be safer. However, having unprotected sex could of course lead to pregnancy so you would only really be safe not taking your pills if you were to restart them in 7 days, which is not what you want to do.
Oh, I just re-read, mid-month the chances of ovulating are slim but it is possible still as I made that mistake a couple of years ago after being taken off my pill due to headaches. According to the doc, although the pill should have stopped any chance of ovulation, it can occasionally happen, though if you've taken all your pills correctly, it seems very unlikely.
Thanks for your reply. I decided not to take the Yasmin on Saturday night and haven't taken it since. We haven't had any additional intercourse since Thursday, so hopefully it's okay. My period started back on the 13th of September and Thursday was Day 12. I had Thursday and Friday nights' pills in me, so that's something (I guess). I'm not sure if I ovulate or not normally, but I suppose Day 12 is still considered a fertile time if using the traditional days 10-14 as the markers.
I decided not to start my Metformin til tomorrow though because I read that it can induce spontaneous ovulation. You know, just in case there's still some sperm wandering around in there. ;-)
Hahah, sigh. You really have to keep a sense of humor with PCOS. I'm trying...
Good thinking, I reckon you should be fine then if you use extra protection for when you do have sex.
Thanks, I went through trying a variety of pills, Yasmin was the best for me in terms of keeping androgen levels down, but I didn't feel good on it the first time I tried it a few years ago. Was back on it last year up until June this year. I also have endometriosis (which really is more severe than my PCOS, which I only get a bit of acne from nowadays, thankfully) so I am currently trying to manage that with bcp, and Yasmin was fantastic for me the second time round, but I was getting really bad daily cramps so I came off it and I'm now on Cilest/Ortho-Cyclen, which has been ok and stopped that but not perfect. It's trial and error I guess.
I have also tried reflexology with homeopathy, and got good results for PCOS with them. Currently doing the same for endo!
