I have been diagnosed recently with PCOS. My GP wants to put me on Metformin. However, I have regular periods, and blood work is normal. (glucose and hormones fine). She has suspected I have PCOS because I have the following symptoms:
excessive hair face and stomach, blood pressure is elevated on meds for that, skin tags and armpits are dark? Also overweight. I had pain in my right ovary that was shooting down my leg for a month. She sent me for an ultrasound. which indicated my ovaries are large and my right one is somewhat larger. Also had fluid surrounding my right ovary which probably meant a cyst had burst. She said that confirms for her that I have PCOS. I had an ultra sound about 6 years ago which showed I had a cyst on my ovary. But the doctor at the time brushed it off saying many women get cysts from time to time.
My question is does this sound like PCOS? or just develop cysts from time. My doctor said I probably don;t ovulate but I know I do, not just because my periods are regular. But I also have sensations in my ovaries during that time and notice a difference in my body. Any thopughts would be appreciated. I'm not sure about taking medication
I had regular period up until i was 19. I would consider myself a thin sister. I do have a J lO butt. My doctor at the time told me i had PCOS and i totally blew him off. He told me at the time that i probably did not ovulate. When your are 19 you really do not care. He put me on bcp to regulate af. We had not problem ttc, but all the pcos symtoms reared their ugly head while pg. Gestational diabetes, preterm labor, magor weight gain. I was so sick while pg i have not convinced myself or dh to go thru it again. my symptons recently got worse so doc put me on met. they got better. my left ovary is being very bad right now. very large with cyst that like to rupture and send me to the floor crying in pain. If you have concerns with taking met call another doc for a second opinion. I have! I have 3 different doctors right now. if they all agree i should take the met then i will. any way just because you have it does not mean you dont ovulate. it is very strange how it effects different people. hope that helped it not then sorry.
When you said b/w was fine what were you reffering to?? Not just glucose and insulin but were your testosterone levels tested, were your FSH and LH levels tested? If the ratio of your fsh and lh are more than 1 ot 1 then you are most definately a cyster. Not all cysters get cysts and not all women with cysts are suffering from PCOS but you need a FULL work up to check it out. Are you being seen by an endo or reproductive endo?? I would go to an endo who is familiar with PCOS and knows how to read the tests.

Wanted to add also that all your symptoms sound like you could have PCOS but symptoms alone are not conclusive. The b/w has to be done and analysed correctly. Also if you are a cyster especially one with your symtoms you HAVE to be on some sort of insulin sensitizing meds until your levels are back to normal. Also you need to modify your diet so it contains less sugar, less simple carbs and more fruits and vegitables.

Hi there. I am new here (today as a matter of fact). I had undiagnosed fertility issues for 5 1/2 years before getting the PCOS news in Dec 2004. I have had periods every month, in the last 2 years they have been heavier, or lighter, more painful. So I was shocked to learn I had PCOS. I have the apple shape, cant lose weight to save my life and didn't know why. The only hair growth I had was on two of my toes. From reading here each of us are different in signs/symptoms. I was put on metformin (500mgs 3 x a day) and if I am not pg in three months I am to go back and he'll reevaluate and begin clomid or something along those lines.
