Default Help for side effects of Depo?

A friend of mine took one shot of Depo-Provera in January, and has been struggling with terrible side effects ever since. Some of the effects such as moodiness and acne have thankfully improved, but other effects are still causing problems such as weight gain that she can't seem to lose in spite of eating right and exercising diligently. She also has not had a period since January.

Is there any kind of herb, vitamin or whatever that can help normalize a person's hormonal system after taking Depo? She has just discovered that it can take up to 18 months or more to get back to normal, and would like to see if there is anything that can speed up the process.

Thanks for your help.

If she is no longer on the depo shots, it can take up to 9 - 12 months for the effects of the shot to waer off. Vitex is suggested for narmalizing hormones. But there is a clear warning NOT to be used with other "western medicines" (ie depo, clomid, bcp's, etc...)

No, she is no longer taking the shots. Does that mean she could try the Vitex, or does she have to wait until her period returns?

vitex is a go then! She needs to get 300mg or more (chast tree berries) and take one a day.

Default Depo

I was on Depo for two years, and it took me forever to get back to normal. Which lasted about two months and then I went into what I know know was the beginning of my noticable PCOS symptoms. I think I went two years after my last shot before I got AF again. Vitex/Chaste Berry is a God send. Just make sure it's a good brand and doesn't have all the extra "crap". The ingredients on mine are essentially just the herb and what comprises the gel cap.

Default still trying to get over Depo myself

I was on Depo for 4 years and my periods stopped within the first two rounds of shots. Now I am going on 19 months since my last shot and STILL am not having periods.

My PCOS symptoms definitely started flaring about 11 months ago and was finally diagnosed in March. It's about time!

I know have a great RE who is helping to see if I can have a period to get rid of my very thin lining (2mm --- which worries him since I haven't had a period in so long).

Keep me in your prayers & thanks for the good advice on other drugs! In your experience, what do you find RE's beliefs are on herbal medications?

My old RE, Dr. McNichol, who moved to Florida two months ago was all for herbal remedies. He felt that the plants and the herbs were created for us to use for any medicinal purpose necessary, he had even told me that for every ailment there is a cure in nature. He believes that PCOS can be cured through herbs....now the new guy, he is totally against herbs and I hate it!!!!!!

Thanks for the info, ladies!

Can anyone recommend a good brand, or have any links to good basic info on vitex?

Default Brand

The brand I have it made by Nature's Way, but there are several selection on the website www.iherb.com from tincture to pills. The pills give me a little heartburn after I take them, which is probably just a reaction to the millet or gelatin. I've always had good luck with tinctures in the past, you just need to pay attention to the % of spring water and alcohol it's suspended in. The higher the percentage, the more you may have to take to make up for the difference.
