Default Help with Spiro (recently prescribed)

Dear All,

Well I have finally been prescribed spiro, not entirely sure about this med. Starting dose is 50mg per day for 1st week, inreasing to 100mg there after. To be very truthful I know very little about spiro only that it causes potassium etc to be retained , not sure about this. Plus it's used in yasmin BCP. Apart from that well, I know very little else.

I'm not sure what to think, saw a consultant, (I think), this week, felt incredibly guilty for being so questioning about meds, pcos. So back to square one. Apparently yasmin's not freely prescribed in our NHS Trust due to cost, lack of research has not valued it's worth so to speak.

I honestly don't know what to think, but if anyone can shed any further light, as to what I can expect from this drug, anything side effects etc. then I would be grateful. I will search around the forums here and other sites, but was just hoping for a more experienced opinion here first.

Thanks well in advance for any help!
Friday tomorrow thankfully! ( I find this cheering though god knows why?)

Hi Fiona
Sorry I have no info on Spiro.

Have you tried posting in the "Other Medications" forum?

Hi there..

I've been on Spiro 100mgs for almost a year. It has made a difference in my symptoms.. less hirtuism, etc. It also acts as a diuretic which is a tremendous help during my cycle. You may want to stay away from foods like bananas and broccoli since they are high in potassium. I don't know about being on both Yasmine and Spiro at the same time though. Both retain potassium so you may want to speak with your Dr. about changing to a new BCP.

I haven't had any problems with spiro. It's excellent.

Default Thanks !

Hi folks,

Thanks for your reply, just nice to have others opinion on this!

Deeds2, Thanks have looked at other forum, but alas still in two minds about this medication, having read some replies!

Ms_Peaches, So glad that this med has worked for you, I have become so cynical of late re doctors, treatments etc. I did ask for spiro 2 years ago but was told that it was an incredibly strong med, and that it was felt that I did not need it then(was offered nothing else either!)

However have recently seen new doctor who would rather have written out a prescription for Spiro than Yasmin, cost is an issue.
So you see that's why I feel slightly wary. Also told that at 40, Iam too old to take the pill - Ah!

You are doing well on it, nothing awful to report, must admit it worries me about potassium levels, but then again. You had no symptoms of tiredness, etc?

Well once again I'm pleased that you have found something that works, I have the tablets, so I may just try.

Thanks for taking the time to reply to me, much appreciated, any info helps, sure you know what it's like!

Anyway folks keep well!

Fiona

PS. You never know in 6 months time, I may just be raving about Spiro too!... hoping!!

Hi FScott...

At 39 I have given up on these pills performing miracles (LOL). They all seem to have specific things that they address. The spiro for me really helps with the hirtuism and that's all I really need it to do. The other thing like I said is the excess water. You're right, it's not an incredibly strong drug but it does do what it sets out to do. I does make you perspire quite a but when you first start it but after a few weeks that side effect tapers off. That's only because its a diuretic.

I take Loestrin as a BCP and it doesn't bother me. As long as you don't smoke very much you should be ok.

Good luck to you!

Thanks MS_Peaches,

Think your right in what you say, and if spiro helps with a couple of specific problems for you then that has to be good!

I don't smoke, not over weight, fairly active life style, blood pressure ok, and yet was advised on taking BCP's or.....rather Yasmin and yet prior to Yasmin being raised in the conversation she did offer me Dianette, strange because it's a BCP. So I don't know.

But you're right "don't expect miracles", do agree!

Thanks once again!

Fiona

When I finally saw the endo they gave me three options for meds: Yasmin, Dianette and Met...I chose Yasmin, but my doc did tell me that alot of the GP's here will not give it because of cost...Which I think is ridiculous, keep us up to date about how you get on with the spiro, I had not heard of it until I read about it on the forum...
