Default Help with thyroid test interpretation?

Hi everyone. I'm new here and am not sure how to interpret these test results. I'm seeing an MD/naturopath who started me on desiccated thyroid when he saw them, but I'm not sure if he was treating me as subclinical or as clinically hypothyroid. I'm also not sure what to make of the upper range T3. Thanks in advance for any help.

Mel

TSH 4.16 (0.30 - 4.70 mu/l)
Free T4 9.9 (9.1 - 23.8 pmol/l)
Free T3 5.1 (2.5 - 5.7 pmol/l)

i would think you'd be just regular old hypo. Subclinical really means that your TSH looks completely normal or is nonexistant yet your thyroid is not producing properly. Your TSH is abnormal and your T4 is low, so it looks like things are flowing in the right direction.

The high Free T3 could be due to a number of things. Were you on any thyroid medication when you had these labs drawn? If not, it's possible that you're coming out of a hyper swing and your T3 hasn't gone hypo yet. Do your symptoms change from feeling slow and sluggish to feeling hyper and so forth?

Thanks so much for your response! I do get confused when I look at the hyper- and hypothyroid symptoms because I have struggled with anxiety AND depression since I was 12, but generally I think I fit the hypo- profile much more. I never feel hyper, just nervous.

I am also confused by the lab values. Do you know if the Canadian and American measurements are different? When I look things up on the internet it usually seems like the ranges listed are very different from my lab ranges. Also, you said the TSH is abnormal, even though it's within the lab range. Can you explain that to me? I really appreciate your help.

Lab ranges are actually calculated from each specific lab's data (or a subset of lab data in the area). That being said, what is "normal" can vary quite a bit considering what data set you're looking at, and there isn't really good controls in place for whether someone misdiagnosed as normal is in the data set or not.... the AACE (american association of clinical endocrinology) and others have listed 0.3-3.0 as the range for "normal" and there have even been studies showing that a TSH that is consistently above 1.0 is abnormal.
