O.k. My dr has no idea what to do with me... I have been having sevear side effects on met & I had to go off compleatly. My dr is trying to get me referred to an endo but it is taking a long time. without the met I am really having problems with the IR now but it is slightly better then the met was. Do any of you know other medications for IR or even homopathic treatments... Please I am starting to get desperate, I have been unable to work from the sevaraty of these problems. Fan
Two that I've seen other cysters use are Avandia and Actos. I too had a severe reaction to Met and been on Actos for 2-3 years and am doing fine.
Your doctor should be able to give you a more complete list and description of options. You have to be your own advocate. If the referral is taking a while and you are suffering, then call the doctor's office, tell them of your difficulties, and ask that the doctor help you with an alternate drug. He went to med school, he can figure this out, even if he has to call the endo he's referring you to and ask for a suggestion.
You can try chromium picolinate. It is an all natural supplement, you can get it at wal-mart!Over there where all the vitamins are......I used to take it regularly b/4 starting Met. It helps with IR.
Met made me VERY sick also, they just changed me to Actos, however she gave me a choice on which one i wanted and gaged it all off my A1C. and so far i havent had to DASH to a bathroom yet
btw where in the far far north too cold are you ?

I have been on Avandia for quite a while and haven't had any issues at all with S/E. I was on Met for about 3 months while I was actively TTCing and had HORRIBLE S/E with it.
There is also Avandamet, which is a combo Avandia/Metformin drug that is out there. My mom takes it and hasn't complained of any S/E with it.
I hope that your doctor gets you some help with meds soon!

you might ask about Byetta. It's another "type 2 diabetes" treatment that works well for IR. I started it last week, and its side effects (nausea) only lasted a couple days. from what my endo tells me, it is heaven-sent, works GREAT at controlling your insulin and sugars.
Downside is that its an injection twice a day, but honestly, it doesn't hurt, the needles are SO tiny.
