Question Herbal Supplements AND Metformin?

Greetings!

I was recently diagnosed with PCOS, and was given a mild prescription for Metformin. I haven't yet started it, but was wondering if it is alright to take at along with natural supplements such as Alpha Lipoic acid, chromium picolinate, L-Carnatine and cinnamon.

Or should I only use those if I react badly to the Met?

Hiya!

My RE has me on cinnamon and Met at the same time, and she said I could also use chromium if I wanted to.

I would just let them know you've started taking whatever else you decide so they know.

Hope this helps.

Can you take saw palmetto and metformin?

How about stinging nettles and chaste berry tree?

According to http://www.gianteagle.com/healthnote.../Metformin.htm there are no known interactions with herbs or supplements. It does say the met might lower calcium, DHEA and Magnesium, so supplementation is suggested. Other than that, herbs should be just fine. Herbs are not drugs - they very rarely have side effects, and if they do it is usually because of a drug interaction, and the side effect is caused by the drug (if you didn't take the drug you wouldn't have the reaction) not the herb, or if the person is allergic.

The best thing someone should do is talk to a Certified Natural Healthcare Professional (find one at www.cnhp.org) or at least an herbalist in a health food store if they don't know what to take.
