So I will start by saying man OHIP ticks me off. I had accepted the fact the OHIP does not pay for IVF unless both tubes are blocked until I have heard the latest thing that they have covered. The human rights tribunal has appealed to OHIP and they are now paying for quite a few gender re-assignments to be performed, which really does not bother me because that's a personal choice if you don't feel that you were born the correct gender. However what I do have an issue with is that I have PCOS and One blocked tube plus we have a small male factor and OHIP won't pay but if both my tubes were blocked we could have 3 shots at it and it won't cost as much. I mean I would still have to pay a little but not the whole amount.
I just don't understand who makes these rules & decisions?
Do any of you have a similar issue?
I was under the impression that the government no longer covered gender reassignment. Do you have a reliable source?
I too have been infuriated by this.
My biggest piss off with the government is now they are trying to implement under the Assisted Human Reproduction Act - Mandated Counselling...wtf?!?
Not like those of us don't have enough issues but to now how have to go to counselling...it's pretty screwed up.
Ya it was on the news a couple of months ago because the human rights tribunal had won in court and it was like a group of 40-50 people. I was like WTF. About the counselling our clinic offerred it and it was in the cost of the IVF but they never made us go. Sometimes I think when they use too much hormones it may be a good idea but I don't think it should be something forced. I even talked to my RE about putting in an appeal to OHIP but he said he has had a couple dozen patients with our same dx. and they have never won OHIP pretty much just says oh well. I even tried to ask him if he could just say the other tube is blocked too but of course that could get him it alot of trouble and he could lose his practice which I arleady knew but come on. Maybe we should go to the human rights tribunal.
As far as I know, many clinics have always offered counselling but from what I have been told is it will now be mandatory for all infertile couples using ART and it's only a matter of time before it's implemented.
Maybe it's a good thing...
If all the infertile couples in Canada tell their counsellors they will kill themselves if the government doesnt pay for IVF...maybe the govt will realize how much it hurts that things like gender reassignment surgery are covered and IVF not.
I have heard numerous times that if the government paid for IVF & single embryo transfers that it would cost less money than what they currently pay for costs indured for multiple births resulting from IVf...true...who knows...it would just be nice to have the same opportunity to have children as fertile couples.
I just wish that they would atleast cover some of it. Can you explain what ART? I thought I knew about fertility treatment but I don't think I have heard of that.
I think sometimes counselling can be useful but not always sometimes you just need to go through it on your own, that's the way I was. I just needed to mourn the failure of the IVF and move on because having someone else to tell me it's alright to be sad, disappointed, angry whatever would have just made it worse. I would probally agree that a single embryo IVF cycle would be cheaper then the care of multiples considering most multiples are early and need more hospital stay.
Hi ladies! WOW!!! I didn't realize that about the gender surgery AND hadn't heard about the possibility of mandatory counselling!! I agree that it's absolutely a personal decision to go to counselling. Infact if the cost wasn't such a huge issue (burden) for fertility treatments then we would have less stress!!! Ugh!!! Pisses me off too!! Like Cooper, we have one fallopian tube, pcos and male factor. I've often 'wished' for both tubes to be blocked with no way of fixing them just to get help financially for IVF (although the fact I already have one child may be to my disadvantage though). There has to be a way to change this!

How are ya? Well I completely agree trust me if there was a way to block my other tube and know that OHIP would fund the IVF I'd do it cause one tube just isn't working for me anyways. I have considered going to the human rights tribunal just to see if they would help me fight OHIP but it is just soo much stress that would probally put me in counselling LOL. Really it shouldn't cost as much as it does because we don't spend that much time there. I have a co-worker that believes the reproductive care is just a money grab and sometimes I believe that but not always depends on my MOOD.
