Hi,
My Name is Courtney, im 21 years old. I was diagnosed with PCOS at the age of 18. I have struggled with my weight and cycles for all my life especially during puberty. The doctor first told me to control my PCOS i had to to loose weight. Well i couldnt. He put my on glucophage and i ended up loosing 80 pds in about a year. well that was great, i went from a size 24 to a size 14. Well when i went back for a yearly, they said everything was fine now and my hormones evened out and took me off glucophage. after that my periods started going back the way they were non existent. i met the love of my life, my now husband soon after. I then went from glucophage to birth control pills. the weight piled on. i have ended up gaining alot of my weight back, im back up to a size 18/20. im scared now my PCOS has "come back". im getting so aggrivated with my weight. i went on Weight Watchers, in 4 months i only lost 6 pounds. so i quit that because it wasnt working. ive changed my pills now for a 3rd time because of headahces, and other things. im just feeling really lost on what i should do. im feeling extremely fat and disgusting because everyone i work for seems to just think all i do is eat the wrong things to gain this weight so fast, but i havent. i dont eat anymore than the normal person. it so frustrating because i know im beautiful , my husband loves me for me, but i dont feel like im where i should be. im from an extremely tall family, dad is 6'8 , mom is 5'10. im 5'10 myself, and im always considered the big girl. "you have such a pretty face" i hear all the time. i just wanna feel the like sexy 21 year old i know is inside somewhere. UGH!!! anyway, thanks for letting me vent and cry a little. i havent felt this bad in a long time. should i go back the doctor again and is it usually covered by insurance? thats a worry too. thanks,
Courtney
Welcome to SC! This is a place where we all know how you feel and know what you are dealing with. Go back to the doctor and go back to glucophage. There are a lot of women here who have lost the weight and balanced their hormones but stay on the gluc to keep it that way! You are beautiful and you are lucky to have your hubby. Please feel better, we are here whenever you need us!

Courtney, sorry you are having a bad time of it. The thing is that as I understand PCOS, you can't be "cured" of it. You can control it through a combination of meds, diet, lifestyle, that you need to work out with a sympathetic doctor, but it doesn't just go away.
You really need a good doctor who is going to work through this with you.
Hang in there, and change doctors if you need to! I switched doctors in December, and what a difference my health has been since I did. I was never diagnosed with the PCOS and pre-diabetes until I found a doctor that listens to me, and is interested in what I have to say about my health. I have had doctors that that taken me off synthroid after my hypothyroidism was at normal levels , and then had other doctors who didn't send me to a sleep study until I suggested it as a reason to being tired. I have also had to go back for extra blood work after the first tests were abnormal for sugar levels. The second blood test was with fasting, and the results were in the normal range. This has happened more than once for years, but the doctor didn't take it any further because the 2nd test was in the normal range. Now with my new doctor, she tells me that an abnormal blood test followed by a normal test was a good indicator of diabetes, so I could have been treated years earlier for this pre-diabetes if I'd had a better doctor. So, the moral to the story is, if you are not comfortable with your present doctor, and they seem to treat you like you know nothing, and that you have no input, then you will greatly improve your health and your mind if you change doctors. You owe your doctor nothing. After I realized that, my life has improved dramatically. I am getting help with my problems, losing weight, and feel excited to see my doctor every 3 months instead of feeling like a child being told what to do. Keep your head up, and don't give up that goal of looking 21 again!
