Hi everyone - I'm Kae and I'm new here; I was diagnosed with PCOS today and I'm feeling pretty blue; my doctor told me not to go onto any websites because I would most likely be mislead by what I would read, however, despite what she said I googled it and eventually found this place - I just finished reading the MAKING PCOS LESS CONFUSING thread, and it's left me feeling much worse... I'm only 15 and I guess that means things could change for the better or worse in the future.. I just came off a period that lasted for a duration of three weeks - it was extremely heavy too - and now I'm left with sore boobs, terrible migraines, back pain and the feeling of being stabbed in the lower abdomen. Great..
All my doctor said to me in terms of dealing with the pain was that panadol (tylenol) doesn't have much of an affect and to use Naprogesic during the day and Mercendol during the night... I have Naprogesic at home but I have no clue about this Mercendol... I was talking to my mum about it and she said I shouldn't start taking it, and then my Dad randomly decided to butt in and say "You'll end up with a poofy face and be on the path to being a druggie."
Thanks for the valuable input, Dad. Neither of them are doctors, and Dad isn't even a woman (well I hope not!), so what would he know?
On the subject of poofy faces, I always feel overweight, however my doctor hasn't been fussing over my weight, about two weeks ago she told me that I looked like a good size for my age, and if I wanted to lose weight not to lose that much. I may not be "fat", though I do put weight on very easily nowadays and consider myself to be chubby for my age; last year I was reasonably happy with my weight, but within the space of about 4 or 5 months I put on about 10 kilos without changing my eating or exercise habits. Last month I went on a diet, I exercised more frequently and ate healthy, and only healthy. Unfortunately it seemed like I wasn't getting very far, and today, it's possible I may have found the reason why. Being part of an Australian calisthenics team, I often feel weary about wearing leotards at competitions, while all the other girls on my team look fine, I have curves in all the wrong places. If I'm not overweight, then I must be close to it. Hopefully I'll be able to learn how to live with all my "imperfections"! Well, I have to wait two weeks before I can see a gynecologist and most likely be prescribed the Pill.... it won't make me put on more weight, j'espere!
Maybe I'll be able to make some friends, and learn a thing or two, and be some kind of help eventually. ^^
And if you read all of this, thanks for listening to me whine.
Welcome to the community, Kae! Don't be discouraged- you are actually lucky to be diagnosed at a young age (though the diagnosis itself sucks!) You can be proactive now, to keep yourself healthy. PCOS doesn't have to be a complete curse- you can do things to manage your symptoms. And remember- every person is different- you might just have a mild case and with being proactive you can keep it under control!
Good luck, sweetie! Don't despair!

I'm so sorry to hear about all the problems you're going through, Kae. It's so tough being diagnosed in high school (I was 16-17 when my doctor diagnosed me), when there is so much pressure to fit in with everyone else. Fortunately, as Mandy mentioned, it's better to find out early, so you can start taking steps to being healthier.
PCOS does call for some lifestyle alterations in order to keep it in check, and that's harder to do for some people than others. However, your doctor did have a valid point in mentioning not to freak out over everything you read. There are a lot of different symptoms, and it's different for everyone. Some people have one or two, and others have many.
It's good to have you here (circumstances notwithstanding, of course). Try to keep your chin up. This site is full of kind, helpful people, great advice, and lots of good info.

Hi Kae-
Believe it or not, the birth control should help tremendously if you are put on the right one. When I was put on Yasmin I lost 50 lbs and it made the facial hair go away. The earlier you are diagnosed, the better! Preventing weight gain is easier than losing weight so if the pill you get put on makes you gain, ask to try a different one. Yasmin and Yaz are popular ones for pcos'ers. This is a great sight and if you ever have any questions, just ask and there will always be someone to answer!! Good luck to you!
Hi Kae! Now that you have a diagnosis, you are well on the way to being able to handle and treat your PCOS well! I'm glad your dr. caught it at your early age and seems proactive in your treatment! We're all here to be a support system for you, so I hope you find some friends and answers around here.
~Kae~ I don't think you are whining. I think being that young and finding out that you have PCOS is not only a wonderful thing, but also a bit overwhelming for you. It is good that you found out early instead of later in life. So, welcome to SC. There is a place on here that maybe your mom and dad should read. Could be helpful to making them understand it better. And there is always someone to talk to on here. Enjoy. HUGS
lovely to meet you, you will gets of support here- everyons is friendly, and there is so much to learn. there is a link to the newbie roadmap in my siggie for you

I am so sorry. I have not been on in the last couple of days. Just go to the PCOS General and it is the first post from Kat. There is all kinds of info. for your family in that post. HUGS Sarah Hope this helps!!!
I was diagnosed at age 16! I think a young diagnosis can be great because as a PP said, you can be more proactive, although I agree, the diagnosis totally sucks! This site is so great, too. It's wonderful to have so much support and information.
@ Sarah: Thank you! It'll definitely come in handy!
@ Lillas07: Yeah, I guess it's best to have found out now instead of further down the track. And I absolutely agree with you, it's been so hard for me, but the feeling of not being alone makes you feel so much better. <3
