Believe me it's no laughing matter because some Dr's aren't even sure what Metformin can do.
You do NOT have to be IR to be prescribed Met. Some Dr's will prescribe it for PCOS symptoms. It all depends on the Dr and his/her knowledge about PCOS and the available treatments.
My own Dr tried telling me that Metformin probably wouldn't do much for me. But I proved her wrong! 8 weeks on Met and I ovulated for the 1st time in probably 15+ years. 3 months on Met and my hormones went from PCOS crazy to more 'normal' levels. Acne has improved a lot also.
And to think my Dr only agreed to put me on it to help me lose weight. Ha! And I didn't lose a pound!
Here is a good research article that you can print and take to your Dr.
THANKS FOR THE REPLY THATS JUST WHAT I NEEDED TOKNOW SO NOW I CAN BE ARMED WHEN I MEET THE NEW DOC YAY! BTW.HOW DID YA LOSE THE 10 POUNDS HEHE I NEED TA LOSE 50 AND NOTHING I HAVE TRIED HAS WORKED. AGAIN THANKS SOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH!
LOVE-JENN

No problem! I lost the 10 lbs without much effort really. I don't exercise, but a few months ago I went to see a dietician.
Basically all I did was start eating more veggies, low-carbed, and low-fat diet. I eat complex carbs (brown rice, oatmeal, wheat/rye bread, and 3 grain pasta).
What my dietician told me to do, is fill my plate with mostly veggies so that 1/2 of my plate is just veggies. Then 1 piece of meat and the rest carbs. So, I have 1/2 a plate of salad or other veggies, 1/4 plate meat, 1/4 plate carbs.
When you make a sandwich, put more veggies (lettuce, tomato, cucumber) and only 1 slice of meat, no cheese. She said if you drink 3 glasses of skim milk a day, you don't need to add any more calcium rich foods. You get all the calcium you need minus all the fat.
Also eat about 5 or 6 SMALL meals a day. Snack in between meals on fresh fruits. I was never hungry eating this way and believe me I can out eat my big DH!
Good luck!
Bee

Like Bee, I was put on met too in March of 2002- I was not OV regularly, and I had a lot of weight to lose, and my symptoms were out of control. I'm on met now for almost a year, and I have lost 115 pounds, my hair has stopped falling out, and I am regular for the first time in my life! (Thanks met!) Studies are finding that met has a unique side benefit....it seems to ease the physical symptoms as well as helping cysters O normally and even to conceive! My endo's pretty convinced that I will not need to do a round of clomid, as she previously thought, because the met is working so well! Hope this helps!

My blood tests did not show insulin resistance, my RE put me on met for PCOS. She also reccommended the sugarbusters diet, which I have been doing for about 3 weeks, not sure how much I have lost, I dont like to weigh myself, but I am sure I have lost something!!
Good Luck!!
