13. Does it help? Yasmin does. I get my period, and no more cysts!

So I'm not a teen anymore, haha, but my PCOS was diagnosed when I was 15, so I spent most of my teen years on the pill and miserable about acne, body hair, and weight. So I've had the experience of being on the pill, but not being sexually active (or in a relationship), and I've been convinced that my appearance (overweight, acne, extra body hair) was going to prevent me from ever being in a relationship with a really popular, attractive guy. I managed to get through all that, and I've also learned to be comfortable with my PCOS. My current boyfriend loves my body, and trust me, I'm about 40 lbs heavier than he is, and sometimes I don't always have time to remove some embarrassing body hair. Is he crazy? Sometimes I wonder . . .

Anyway, I'm twenty now, so not a teen, but if anyone wants to talk to me about the experiences of being a teen with PCOS (and hey, I'm still in school for a couple more years at least), please don't hesistate to ask me questions!

For those of you who don't feel as if you're seeing results with birth control pills, I'll tell you right now that I NEVER saw the results I thought I'd get. But the most important result with birth control is that you get your period regularly. It means that your hormones are getting rebalanced, and (for me, this is important) the pill also prevents REAL ovulation. Many ovarian cysts can be caused by ovulation, when the egg somehow messes up and ends up as a cyst. I might need to read up on that more, though. My body hair hasn't changed, I still get acne (which is genetic, actually), and I've done nothing but gain weight since my diagnosis. But I get my period!

IamAnewCyster, the best advice I can give you is to learn how to swallow a pill. It took me until I was about 10 to learn, which was later than most of my friends. It is VERY difficult to do until you manage to figure it out. Then it's a cinch! For me, my sister and I used to eat canned mandarin oranges, and we would try to swallow them without crushing them. The shape of the sections, and the fact that they came in juice really helped, since they were so lubricated. So take notice of your eating habits and see if you might be swallowing something bigger than a pill normally. If you want to test a pill, just put it in your mouth (I put it on the front of my tongue), and pretend it ISN'T there. Then take a swig of water and swallow, as if you had nothing in your mouth. If that doesn't work, I have a friend who takes a mouthful of water, then tips her head back, opens her mouth, and drops the pill in. So it's sort of the reverse.

The ability to swallow pills is DEFINITELY something worth figuring out. I've tried crushing pills and putting them in something (ice cream), and it wasn't worth it.

I feel the same way! I am 20 now too but I was diagnosed when I was 15.
The whole thing about a guy finding you attractive sometimes worries me too. My bf is quite larger than me (6'5", 280 lbs) but he is absolutely amazing. He is aware of my PCOS and supports me.
I am on Alesse and I do feel like it's not doing enough, but my doc says to just keep with it until it's time for me to start trying.
Anyways, it was nice finding someone I could relate to! Thanks for the post!

Hehe, my boyfriend is 5'7", and I'm not quite 5'6". Not so much of a height difference for me!

I'm glad to see someone in the teen section who's also not-quite a teen anymore! I have the feeling that so long as we're in school, we're kinda teens . . . right?

I agree. The other day I was thinking to myself, "Wow, my face really cleared up, I guess my facewash is really working", THEN I realized "Oh god, maybe I 'grew out of it'!" It sounded so weird to say that I've grown out of something :| lol

Phira, thanks so much for the tip! I'll try it. Once i managed to swallow an Advil GelTablet thing and it just slid down. the metformin pills are HUGE and circular, though, so i might try cutting them in half or even 4ths if i start to get the hang of it. thanks again!!!!

No problem! Cutting pills in half is also a good idea. Gel tablets and coated pills are GREAT for learning how to swallow pills, and Advil (the pink pills) actually taste kind of sweet. I can't take them any more (allergy), but I loved them, haha.
