I just wanted to say hey, I just found you all today.
Please bare with me as I tell my story it is long, but it has been a long battle going no where!!
Last year when I went to my gyn for my yearly, I had a baby the year before. I asked him why I couldn't lose any weight and that look my stomach still looks 9 mon pregnant, what do you think is wrong? I have been going to Curves.
He said oh you have PCOS, look it up on the internet there is a lot of info there about it, eat less carbs. Eventually the rest of your body will catch up with your stomach and you will get diabetes, if you do not do something about it. Cut back on carbs.
SO I told my friend who is a nurse about having it and she said did he give you anything for it? I said no he said just cut back on carbs, I didn't have any idea there was anything else to do, she said the med and it probably was Metformin, she said it was for people who had diabetes but it worked real well for PCOS. SO I called the Dr and asked if he thought I might be a candidate for that, he scheduled a fasting test for me and called a couple days later to say no, I was not serious enough for that.
So I have plugged along and I went to my family Dr, because I have had some white painful spots on my tongue the Dr treated it for Thrush and I took 2 cycles of antibiotics, which none of it has helped. SO he had me come in for another visit and pretty much said he has no idea lets take more blood tests I think it is your thyroid, so a couple days later I get the news no it is not that.
I get so upset because I think oh great they are going to find something to help me and then no the blood is not showing anything is wrong with you.
I have mentioned to my family Dr that the Gyn/OB says I have PCOS and he just looks at me like I am nuts.
To make a long story short, I have an appt. on Tuesday and I am going to ask him if he thinks I have PCOS.
I am just so frusturated and I am tired of being made to feel like a hypo.
Hello there. I am just as new as you are. I am learning as I go along, and alot of these ladies on here are helping. I really am not good on advice, but the best I can suggest is finding a new doc. Do some research and even post a thread on here asking if there is anyone else from your area and see if they have found a PCOS specialist. Trust me you are not a hypo, you are a woman with instincts and you know when something is wrong. PCOS causes all kind of other symptoms. Also, there are threads on here that give detailed listings on the exact things your blood should be tested for. When you walk into the dr office tell them what YOU want instead of waiting for them to tell you what they think they should do.
The symptoms I have include irregular periods (if they even show up), insulin resistance, more hair where there shouldn't be and less hair where there should be, pains in my sides when I have enlarged cysts, and acne on my chest, back, and face, and I don't ovulate.
Well, it just looks depressing all typed out like that.
I hope this helps. And keep your head up, it will all work out.
~C

Welcome! I'm new this board but not new to PCOS. I was diagnosed in 1999. It took some time for me to be diagnosed. I went 11 months without my period, suddenly started gaining weight in my abdomen and developed hair in unwanted places. My doctor in New York did an internal sonogram and diagnosed me w/ PCOS in 1999. Her solution was to put me on BCP which worked somewhat but also made me crazy.
I went to an Endocrinologist and had my thyroid tested. I was told I was "borderline hypothyroid." Continued to gain weight for the next 3 years. Went off BCPs to gain my sanity. Got pregnant in February 2001 and then MC in May 2001. In 2003 I moved to Texas and got married.
I have now found the best OB/GYN ever. She listens to me, reads all of the research I bring her and has a very positive attitude. It is so important to find the right doctor.
I am a "textbook" case. My symptoms include: irregular cycle, unwanted hair, 80 lbs overweight despite diet & exercise (I actually lost 15lbs when I started Met and now I'm holding steady--I think I need a higher dose). I also have a skin condition called hidradenitis supporativa that has been linked to PCOS.
We are now TTC and after a year of nothing I have just started Clomid. Keep your fingers crossed.
I wish you luck and implore you to STAY INFORMED. Sometimes you have to take charge of your own health!

welcome to sc if your dr makes you feel bad, then change dr. Thats what i had to do to get some pcos help. You are not a hyperondriac.
What id suggest to do, is write down everything that you want to ask/say so you dont forget. Thats what i always do. There is a link to the newbie roadmap in my siggie for you

I'm new to PCOS and to the site, however, I am not new to hypothyriodism. There is no borderline, you have it or you don't that comes from my Doctor. The fact that you have an underactive thyroid is another reason for weight gain. If going untreated it can also make it harder for you to become pregnant. I would tell your doctor you would like to be treated for the thyroid condition. The med is Synthroid its very inexpensive.
