I am a 25 yr old woman, divorced and living everyday in hell....Before being diagnosed with PCOS when i was 13 years old i had surgery to remove my appendix, they also found 2 large cysts before they could remove my appendix, one was the size of a softabll and the other of a grapefruit, this raised a few eyebrows with my drs. considering i had my period for about 6 months b4 this, but noone followed up on it and me being young didnt know any better i thought with removing the cysts they have removed the problem also...I was diagnosed with PCOS when i was 19 yrs old. The doctor that diagnosed me said I would NEVER have kids, I couldnt have a normal life unless I had surgery to yank my womanhood out....I generally get my period for 7-9 months straight then off for a few months and on again....I cant afford to buy insurance to get this taken care of, ive been denied insurance from the state{wisconsin} and from SSI. I was wondering if anyone knew of anything they may think can help me out...I live in a constant state of pain and embarassment....It makes it almost impossible for me to work because i have to change my pad like twice an hour but yet i cant find any help for my problems...so please if anyone knows of anything that they think can help me plz post or email me princesa_del_mono@yahoo.com Thanks 4 your time and showing me that im not alone

HI,
Welcome to SC! I hope you feel right at home here!
First of all, you CAN have PCOS and have kids. The dr. was wrong to say NEVER. Sometimes it is a struggle, and sometimes you need a lot of help. And yes, sometimes it doesn't work out. But to say you absolutely couldn't...... that's not true. I conceived my daughter with the help of met.
And you don't have to have your ovaries removed just because you have PCOS! I wonder what that doctor's idea of a "normal" life is? Even if you have cystic ovaries, even if they are painful sometimes, there are other ways of helping that.
Your period sounds like mine before I was diagnosed with PCOS. I would bleed for weeks, then have no period for months. I also soaked a pad or two an hour. That is too much bleeding! Even though I understand the $$$ concerns, they cannot deny you treatment at an ER for that kind of bleeding.
I didn't know what "SSI" was, but I wondered if Wisconsin has a medical card you could apply for (like medicaid). That's what they do here in Illinois, I think. (Unless that's what you were saying "insurance from the state"). Maybe if you were seen in the ER or something that could get the ball rolling for that, maybe even partial disability if they see you are bleeding too heavily to go to work. I'm not sure, I'm just throwing out ideas here because I really want you to be seen!
It may seem like a minor suggestion, but I have found that a heating pad helps a lot when I have the ovary pain.
If you would like to talk, please feel free to email/pm me. Good luck and I hope things go better for you sosn. You are not alone-- all of us here will be glad to help.
Jenny

My doctors began talking hysterectomy before I was even 16 years old. They told me I would never be able to have a child. I had long periods lasting months at a time with very little break. I had been hospitalized several times over the massive amount of bleeding. Years later I got pregnant by surprise. I lost those babies and after the bleeding stopped, so did my menstrual cycle. Many more years passed and I began fertility treatments. It was a long road for me but I have a beautiful baby boy who is just a little over 13 months old now. This is the same old song and dance as many of our cysters have been through.
The only advice I can give you now for treatment without insurance coverage is to begin a low carb diet. This was really important in my treatment. It has been invaluable to many cysters. There are many diets out there and many you can research right here. A few of the most popular are the IR diet, Atkins (which is my favorite WOE), and the South Beach diet. Some people find that the change in diet alone is enough to alleviate a lot of their symptoms. I had vast improvement when I was following my diet (being a bad girl now). Being on the diet was almost like not having PCOS and type II diabetes for me.
Please don't let them perform a hysterectomy. I am so glad I refused even when the doctors insisted that it was really my only option. My parents pressured me to go ahead and do it, but thankfully didn't force me.
