Hi there.
It's so good to find so much information in one spot!
I only found out that I had PCOS about 4 months ago. My periods had stopped for 8 months but my doctor just said keep waiting don't worry! So I went and saw another Doctor and thats when I learnt about PCOS. I was put on Diane and told I'll get a moustache hair loss and come back and see me when you want to get pregnant. The pill made me put on a bucket load of weight, I have always had to be incerdibly strict to stay at about 60-65kg with constant 2 hours + daily exercise (I'm an exercise fanatic anyway so no biggie) but now I have suddenly expanded up to nearly 70 and it's all around my rear end, thighs and belly and it seems to be very hppy there and absolutly refuses to budge. Not to mention the Pill makes me horribly depressed and unhappy! I went and saw a specialist and he just said calories in calories out thats all there is too it! He also diagnosed Endometritis as well so I just it removed via keyhole.
Anyway whinge moan groan enough of that! Too the point I'd really appreciate any help on weight loss and stopping my hair falling out! I'm malting more than the cat. I think I have stopped expanding by living on tiny portions of fruit, veg and nuts. (RIP chicken toasties and Mum's pancakes)
But any advice would be more than welcome. Especially about Metformin (sp?). Who does it help? Why hasn't the doctors or anyone else told me about it yet?
Have you tried more of the herbal method rather than BCP, considering it sounds like you were doing really well before with keeping the weight off? Maybe you should go back off the pill and try to regulate normally?
Let me know what you think :O)

Hi! Welcome! (are you an aussie or kiwi cyster? Not that it matters but I am curious lol)
Doctors may not have mentioned Metformin to you because you're not terribly overweight (although i don't know how tall you are! lol) so may not suspect that you are IR. Its not a weight loss drug but if you are IR it might help you move those few kilos seeing as your exercise and eating sounds to be on track.
But if you can confidently link your weight gain to the pill why not try a different one? Are you on it primarily for the facial hair or contraception? There are other drugs available if you are using it just for the facial hair. The name escapes me but I'm sure someone else will help me out!
BTW, I tried Met and came off it (despite losing weight) because my diet was pathetic. I was limited by what I could eat on it without having terrible side effects - ie trips to the bathroom!

Hello thank you both!
I'm an Aussie- Byron & Brisbane based (moved around a lot recently! and in Brisbane at the moment which is killing me never lived so far from the beach!)
I'm only on the pill to kick start my period and facial hair etc. Not contraception. I would definatly try herbal remedy- I see a really good natropath here in Brisbane. I wasn't really given many options at all- I was started on Levlen then moved onto Diane. Changing and/or stopping and starting the pill pretty much means 3 weeks of horrible depression tears and mood swings. I become an absolute monster!
So any advice on the herbal remedy is very welcome..
Thanks guys.

Hello
I am new to this forum too, not so new to PCOS, but just starting to fully understand it now.
I was diagnosed a few years ago from an ultrasound which my doc sent me for when I had what I now think is 'ovulation bleeding'.
My doctor told me there wasnt much he could do, but that I would have to watch my weight and exercise more.
A few years and almost 25 kg later, I stopped having periods all together for a few months. I went to a different doctor at my medical centre who told me that 'women with PCOS do very well having babies under starvation conditions'. She then proceeded to tell me that I was eating too much and couldnt be doing any exercise. The truth was that I was training with a personal trainer and eating fairly healthily.
Unfortunately she got me down for a few weeks, until someone suggested (without knowing I had PCOS) that I go and see their Naturopath as I had been feeling tired and grumpy for no apparent reason.
The Naturopath that I went to see explained to me that PCOS is linked with 'Insulin Resistance' - a term I had never heard of before. She explained that it was highly likely my body was not coping with all of the carbs I was putting into it - even the low GI ones.
She suggested a high protein, high veg, almost no carb approach to see how that went. I am only a few weeks into it, but already have so much more energy and the scales are FINALLY going down.
Suddenly it is all making sense to me - the carb cravings, the water retention, the anxiety.
I am really disappointed in the two doctors I have seen, and am currently looking for a new doctor who knows a lot more about the condition.
I love this website - it is so good to hear stories of other girls in the same boat!!!
Hi there,
My natropath gave me a disgusting tasting brew to drink to as well as magnesium but for I dont think it has the power to make my cycle normal unfortuantly. Then again if the worse it tastes = the better it is for you I should live to 100!
I cut the carbs and sugars completly a couple of months ago and I think I have finally stopped expanding. I havn't deflated any yet though.
It is really diheartening to be told "well just eat less/exercise more' when you live on celery and run a half marathon every morning!
When is someone going to come up with a cure that tastes like chocolate and requires ample R & R in the sunshine? Thats what I want to know!

I cut out loads of foods too. but allow myself one a day a week to eat what I want. This way I never really break my diet and have managed to loose weight (30kgs) by doing it this way. So as much as I might miss something I can always have it in 7 or less days time (by which stage often the craving has passed)
I am going natural, and have been for about 8 months now, its up and down, but I am willing to try this method for a while longer before I resort to something else. I really don't want to go back on the pill.... so yeah, I dunno!!! I certainly have periods again which is a good thing, and I haven't gained more weight, but my periods are totally erratic (my current one is now 20 days and counting!).

Where did you get your advice from with the natural stuff you are taking. I am REALLY keen to take this approach, so would love to hear any info you have.
I take all the things in my siggy ad so far am finding it working pretty well. Though diet and exercise play a huge role as well :O) that was my biggest thing to achieve!

I've decided to stop taking BCP- I have a new specialist who finally thinks it's a good idea to see what my insulin levels are at and wants me to start on met.
Has anyone here heard of NAC? Or how to get onto it in australia? Also how do i get my hands on Saw Palmetto? I'm trying to get a heads up on the hair issues.
Cheers guys.
