Hi Aussie here - question about Naturopaths & PCOS?
Hello to my fellow Aussie peeps
Hi I am new to the forum, I am have not been diagnosed with PCOS as yet? I need to see a doctor to do the checkups. However been following soulcyster forum and joined up as i have questions.
I was on the pill from 1997 (Trifeme 10/04 - 2008 Diane 35 10/04-08/08) I broke out with acne from face, neck chest and back and its been ongoing for the past year. I went to a naturopath and been put on supplements to help detoxify liver, assist digestive system, help my adrenals and decrease estradiols.
However, my question is can Naturopaths diagnose or know if you have PCOS? Or does it need to be diagnose by GP?
Diagnosis is often by elimination first to ensure your symptoms aren't as a result of something else that can be more easily diagnosed via blood tests etc.
When I was diagnosed, my doctor said that if nothing else came up in the blood tests, she would diagnose me based on my physical signs (hair, acne, absent periods, belly fat etc), some of the blood test results (LH:FSH & testosterone) and if I needed more confirmation, I would have an ultrasound.
I'm not sure if naturopaths have the ability to request blood samples etc? That would vary from country to country I expect. Not that blood tests are 100% conclusive of PCOS, but they may show up other medical issues that may be contributing to your symptoms. Why not get the diagnosis through your GP or Ob/Gyn etc and then seek help with long-term treatment from a Naturopath?
Hi Kylie...
I read an article on PCOS in a Cosmo mag a few years ago & took it to my Dr and showed him and he sent me off for an internal (dildo-cam lol) ultrasound & sure enough we could all see the little black dots.I have recently contacted a naturopath as i want to go a more natural way of treating my PCOS symptoms (Maca Root etc)...she deals with many PCOS ladies but i would guess that being properly diagnosed would come down to an ultrasound...and even then, you may just have PCO but not PCOS.From what ive been told by my previous Dr,they can never actually 'confirm' that a person has PCOS,just like they dont know exactly where it comes from & what can cure it...
I hope you find out soon & thats its good news (no PCOS at all!)
Another Aussie Cyster here. I see a fantastic Gyno in Melbourne who specialises in PCOS and he says the best way to diagnose it is with full blood tests, including testing for Insulin Resistance.
An ultrasound alone won't determine if you have PCOS. Some Naturopaths are great but I would recommend you see a gyn or an endo as well.
Good luck hun and ask any questions you need to

Or you might not have cysts at all. Having PCO doesn't always mean PCOS, just as having PCOS doesn't always mean PCO.

Hi Puppy Love
I live in Melb, and and was wondering what kind of solutions your Gyno put forward?
Also as for dianosis, i was told that you have to have the following three system/test results to have PCOS
-Blood Test
-Symptons (missed periods, weight, hair, skin etc)
- Ultrasound (i had internal & external)
As I am an Aussie gal, living in Canada. I have made an appointment to see a female doctor in Calgary Canada. So I really hope she can help me to figure out my acne hormonal imbalance problems and see if I do have PCOS???
I am feeling nervous about it because sometimes doctors dont seem to care when you ask for things. I will try and put my foot down to demand blood tests, Ultrasounds whatever other tests to take to figure my issue out.
Any tips for seeing a doctor???
I am also seeing my Naturopath first on the same day I see the female doc. I finish one of the supplements Ultra Indinol Plus also known as DIM that assists with hormonal imbalances or excess estrogens in body. She doesnt want me to get a repeat on that. So very concerned what my skin will do??? I am trying to remain positive.
I will let you all know what happens next Wednesday 23. I hope everything goes well
