I've just been diagnosed with PCOS. At first I was relieved to finally have a dr say 'yes, no wonder you have those symtoms' then I just wanted to cry. Now I feel ok with it. I'm still confused, but I've had a read of some of your posts and I understand PCOS a lot better - so thank you all.
I'm 26 I've had heavy, very frequent periods and terrible ovulation pain as long as I can remember. It got to the stage where I had no iron stores in my body, my blood sugar was all over the place and I was suffering mood swings and teribble headaches. After a couple of years of drs telling me there was nothing wrong I finally forced one to give me a referral to a gyno. He was great, pieced a lot of my symtoms together and finally sent me for the right tests. An ultrasound proved my ovaries were full of cysts, & blood tests showed my hormone levels were not balanced and my insulin was too high - other drs just told me I was putting on weight because I needed to exercise more!
He has put me on Dianne 35 and Met. I haven't started the Met yet, cause I hear it can cause sickness at the onset. I work full time & study part time & today I handed in my final essay at uni, so i wanted to wait till after I had written it in case I was sick.
Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks, your posts are very inspiring & you sound like a wonderful group of people.

When I started Metformin my Doctor started me very slow-to avoid any side effects.
1st - three days- 1/2 pill (250mgs) with Dinner
next three days- 1/2 pill with Breakfast and 1/2 pill with Dinner (Total 500mgs for day)
Next three days- 1/2 pill with breakfast, 1/2 pill with lunch, and 1/2 pill with Dinner (Total 750mgs a day)
Next three days- 1/2 pill with Breakfast, 1/2 pill a day with Lunch, 1 whole pill with Dinner (Total 1000mgs a day)
I don't know what your dose is, but you keep going that way until you get to your dose. I try to avoig processed carbs, they cause stomach upset on Metformin. Good luck and please ask anything here.
I have learned so much from the wonderful women on this board.
I'm new here too, but so far I've found the website very helpful and very friendly, and I'm sure you will too

M Allison, I'm following your advice and starting with a small dose of the Met. So far I've only been a bit squeemish which is good. Thanks for the tip.
I also spent many years with long heavy AF's - it took almost 16 yrs to get someone to listen to me! It was such a relief to finally know that I wasn't the only one - SC and the cysters here have been a true God send!
You should check out THIS THREAD for some useful info about Met!
I wish you the best & I look forward to seeing you around the boards!

Welcome Jade! It truly is a bittersweet to finally have a real diagnosis, isn't it? I have been on met for 9 months now...started at 500mg and am now on 1000mg/day. At first I had some tummy trouble with it, but I found that taking it at bedtime helps a lot in that department. Hope you have luck with it! See you around!

I was also just diagnosed. I understand your relief of finding out. It is very bittersweet though. At least we know something can be done now! I'm also on metformin and it makes me a little sick to my stomache too. It's not too bad though. I'm taking 500mg to start because I took it when I was pregnant with my son, and didn't have a bad reaction. My doctor said I can go up to 1000 when I feel okay with 500. There is so much support on this board, see you around!
