I first would like to say that I REALLY love this message board and have been a lurker for quite some time now and have finally decided to come out of hiding
So anyway, getting to my question. I was wondering have any of you ever upped your own dosage of XR or regular Glucophage without your doctor knowing? The reason I ask is because I have been on XR for 6months, I have not lose any weight. Since I take 1500mg/day, I was wondering if I add one more pill would this possible get a jump start on things? I asked my Endo last time a was in a month ago about upping my dose and she said it's really not neccessary not unless you're diabetic. But she said with treating the PCO, 1500mg should be fine. Well, I would like everyone else's input. I am VERY tempted to take another pill a day! I mean could this really hurt? I have heard about some people not seeing any changes until 2000mg or higher! What should I do? Please help. Thanks in advance for all of your help.

I saw my doctor last month and he mentioned the recommended dosage is somewhere between 1500 and 2500 mg depending. Have you had other improvements?? Shortened cycle/ovulation, less symptoms etc??? Do you have weight to lose??
I never saw any weight loss until I recently cut the carbs, now I am down 7 lbs, I am however 5'9 142lbs. The no carbs worked quickly!
The only thing with taking more pills is your Rx is going to run out sooner and your doctor will know you are taking more than prescribed. I honestly don't think it will physically harm you. I think you have a strong case to up the dose if you have no improvements at all on 1500 mg.
Please check with your doc before taking more on your own...just don't want to see anything adverse happen
I'm taking 2000/day, and I know many cysters have had more success around 2000. If you are having no improvements at all, I would talk to your doc about upping the dosage, at least to see if it will help.

I just wanted to say that I use to be on regular Glucophage a year and 1/2 ago, and I did lose about 25 pounds. My insurance company switched over to Metformin, and I couldn't take the side effects. I felt sick to my stomach everyday on Met, and so after about 2-3 HORRIBLE months on it, without any further weight loss, my Endo prescribed me the XR in August/02. Now, since being on the XR I haven't losed any weight and it's been 6 months! I was taking regular Glucophage for only 2-3 months and losed 25 pounds without any diet changes or anything!
I do need to lose weight and I have a long way to go. That's why I was wondering if I should take another pill a day or not. Like I said, last month when I asked my Endo, she told me to just stay with the 1500mg/day because that's sufficient enough for treating PCO. So, I have listened to her and did not raise my dosage. She did mention to me about a diet pill called Xenical though. I told her that I would have to think about it because I have heard so many horror stories about unpleasant side effects. Also, my insurance company doesn't cover it and it would be around $125 each month! Yikes!
Well, thanks again for all of your help. I will just have to see what else I can do.

Please talk with your doctor before uping your dosage.
They might agree with you or have a very good reason to
say no...
Take care,
Kaci
