hi, i'm brand new here. i'm kristen, i'm 17... recently diagnosed. here's my story:
i've had the most irregular periods ever since i began menstrating 5 years ago. my doctor kept telling me that it sometimes takes until the age of 22 to regulate. that sounded so annoying to me... not ever knowing where i will be when i'm going to start my period. i wanted to be regular! then recently i noticed that my hair growth was changing... my electrolosis lady pointed this out to me.... i was even getting random hairs on my neck. she removed them, but told me that i should see an endocronolgist. i made an appointment right away. i told the doctor about my irregular periods, hair growth, acne and recent weight gain. (even though i excersize a lot!) she told me it might be PCOS and scheduled a blood test and ultra sound. 3 days after my tests, she called my house with the news that i had a cyst on my right ovary that was the size of the ovary itself! also my testosterone level was 41 (when it should be between 5 and 40) and this was probably causing the hair growth and irregular periods. she put me on birth control right away! i've only been taking it for about a week... but i am so surprised at how much more i am eating! i'm not overweight... i'm scared of becoming so. well when we found out these results, my mom told me that she had also had a cyst on her right ovary 20 years ago... and they didn't discover it until it ruptured... so i'm very glad they found mine before that happened to me. also, the doctor asked me if i ever have pain on the right side of my ovary... and now that i really think about it, whenever i laugh too hard, cough or sneeze, i do feel a sharp pain in that area.
well anyway... i think this website is a great idea.!
welcome!! has your doc started you on any meds?? xo jenn

I just wanted to let you know that I was in the same boat as you...I started menstrating when i was 13 and never has a regular cycle...At 17 my doctor told me it was normal and that he could out me on the BCP but i shouldn't worry about it... I thought it was great that I wasn't gettin them every month so I didn't do anything about it....He also told me that it could take until I was 21-23 for it to regulate....
Well Back in March of 2004 I brought it up to him again along with the fact that I had facial hair thats growing like a mad man! So he tested me for PCOS...the tests came back and bang I had it....He started me on BCP and sent me to a gyne... the pills only worked for a couple of months and now I am back to getting a cycle once every 4-5 months and my gyne doesn't think there is anything wrong with it... He keeps shoving pills down my throat and telling me that I have to lose weight (which isn't as easy as it looks)
My advice to you is get all the info you can and take someone with you to your appts... Its a little overwhelming at first but once you learn about what is going on inside your body its gets a bit easier...Also if you don't think you gyne is paying enough attention to you ask to see and endo... I did... he refused (thats how much he cares about it) so I went back to my family doc and I am going to Toronto at the end of March to get some real answers.
YOu are right... This website is an awesome idea!
Ciao
Karrie

Just wanted to say Welcome to Soulcysters...I know all to well that it can be very over whelming upon finding out the you do have or even may have PCOS..I had never even heard it until it came out of my DRs mouth and he was telling me that he was 99% certain that this was my problem....I like you was DXed young (when I was 21)....but I had always had problems just they had never been linked together...
The best advice I can give is the same advice given to me 2 years ago by someone on this very board...ARM YOURSELF WITH KNOWLEDGE!!!! Thats the best thing I ever did for myself.....that and finding this site......
Hope this helps and that we see ya around the boards
