HI Everyone
I am new here and have lots of questions....
Why is everyone on Met?
I understand weight gain/ obesity is common with PCOS - but my DR says I just need to diet and exercise, but my weight continues to rise.
I seem to think that my weight gain and PCOS goes hand in hand, but the Doc thinks otherwise. I have never been so heavy, and it is very difficult to get and keep the weight off.
I am currently taking Spiro - but I don't know how effective it is....
Does anyone else have terrible PMS? Finally yesterday I went to the DR and told him about my PMS and he did put me on something for that - is that a symptom of PCOS also?
I don't know what else to ask, so I'll just keep reading your posts.
Thanks.
Tracie
Welcome to SC! Theres tons of great info on PCOS here what the symptons are ect... check out this link and it will give you a better understanding... http://www.soulcysters.com/info.html
As for your doctor - -Get rid of him, He's an Idiot! Go to someone who understands and specializes in PCOS. It doesn't matter what you eat..you WILL gain weight. You can eat a salad or a full Pizza won't matter. You should probably set yourself up with a nutrionist as well. They help a great deal with tring to get wieght issues under control. Met is for women and correct me if I am wrong cysters...Met is for woman that are Insulin resistant. I am not my level is at 5. But its my understanding that if you have levels of 6 or higher you are considered insulin resistant.
If you have other ?'s I am always on this thing. I'm addicted along with everyone else on this site haha... Have a great day!
Oh, also you might want to download the medicor journal on PCOS. Its very informative.

Welcome! I wanted to say that I've not been diagnosed as insulin resistant, even though I probably am... long story. But Met can be used for any PCOS women really. From what I have researched this is basically how it works...
Insulin is a hormone just like estrogen or testosterone... if there is too much or too little of it, it messes up the other hormones in your body, making everything out of order. Some believe that insulin is the starting factor of PCOS so if you can get that in order, the other hormones can sometimes follow. Met lowers your insulin in your blood, and lowers your bloodsugar even if it's only slightly elevated. The extra sugar in your blood and insulin not using the sugar you eat properly is the reason for the weight gain, that's why low carb diets work well for PCOS women in most cases. I truely believe that it's helped me to get pregnant by regulating my whole system... starting with my insulin. If if you're not trying to get pregnant, Met and a birth control pill are great to help any symptoms you may have... I noticed so many changes in only 5 months of taking both (then stopping the BCP to get pg). HTH
I second that--your doctor sounds like an ass! This site is packed with women who have heard the same sorry tale from their doctors--eat less, exercise more, it's easy. Well, it just isn't that simple for women with PCOS. Whether you are prescribed Met or not depends on your doctor's take on your problems. It's a lot less common for it to be prescribed in the U.K. It helps sensitise you to your insulin; many cysters are insulin resisistant to some degree. There is so much info here and lots of very knowledgable people. Enjoy soulcysters.
