Hi. I just got diagnosed with PCOS last tuesday and I am trying to figure this stuff all out. I have lots of questions some of which I already had posted on a diet forum. Anyway my dr. prescribed metformin which i have not started taking as I am generally opossed (not in a naturopathic way) to pills until i know the exact pros and cons to them and also to ortho tri cyclen. I have to admit I am extremely skeptical of my diagnosis but am becoming a bit more used to the idea??? I have contacted an endicrinologist but no answer yet as to wether i will get an appt or not. Also my dr and the 2nd dr i went to see because i decided mine must be a quak lol recommended that i go on the optifast program to loose some of the excess weight i have. I have gained about 100 lbs in the last 2.5 years i weigh (284) also i have severe migraines which have cesead a bit since i quit smoking 10 months ago. uh lets see what other info....my dhea level was 9.9 at this time. Can anyone tell me what Prolactin is and what its about? I've looked online but I have a copy of my lab results and the DR circled that number but I dont know why it was 6.4. I am not pregnant and I dont want to get pregnant for about 3 more years but definitly want to do whats in my best interest to be able to get pregnant when the time comes. I got off b/c 2 months ago and that is how i was discovered to have pcos when i started menstruating 2x a month for the last 2 months i went to the dr and he did a blood test. (not fasting mind you) anyway i hope to learn a lot here and find some people who can answer a lot of questions that i have. oh also i am "knocking on the door to diabetes" direct quote lol.
Welcome! There are lots of articles on Metformin around here. You should be able to do plenty of research about the pros and cons. People will be happy to tell you about their personal experience with the drug as well. There is also a link to normal ranges for hormone levels. That might help some with the prolactin question. These may be a little easier to find on the soulcysters.com page. There's also some info there about the diagnostic process for PCOS if you want a little more info on why your doctor decided on this diagnosis.
