hello my name is melanie i been reading your stories and questions and i thought i would introduce myself. I'm 26 and was dx 04-2003 i'm in the process of adopting my neice allie she's 11 months old i have had her with me since she was a week old. I was going to nursing school and working full time i had no intrest at this time to raise/adopt a child when i found out her mother gave birth to her(see this is a relative my family pretty much cut off) anyways the mother is mentally unstable. and in the hospital threated to cause physcal harm to her self it was unclear if she was gonna cause harm to the child. Anyways CPS removed the child from the hospital and put her in foster care my sister called me and told me that this relative has giving birth and they took the child. for some reason at that moment without really giving it any thought i decided to take this child in. I lived in a one bedroom house and i am single i never really raised any children i mean i babysat my friends kids. anyways i called every member of my family i guess to get some type of support they had ther concerns but pretty much stood behind me. well i went to CPS the next day met face to face (i went unannounced) and met with the caseworker she was nice explained to me and told me this was not temporary this was long term. She told me it will take a month for her to get placed with me. I figured hey cool got a month to get ready well that was thursday friday she called me and told me that she was coming tuesday to do the "house inspection" then wednesday i will have her(wow some month) i had nothing i had to hurry to get everything together. anyways allie is now with me 11 months everything is going good her BM has never seen her since the day she had her no contact visits court ordered now the next step is termanting rights then adoption. At first in the begining i had a lot of concerns because i am bi-racial and allie is white but all is good so far. sorry for the long story just wanted to get in as much as i can. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask hope to chat soon.

Hi Melanie, welcome. Wow, what a story, congrats. I can only imagine all the ups and downs of a sudden parenthood. I was the primary caregiver to my neices and nephews for about 5 years. Different circumstances, but also rough. I have to tell you that it takes some character to step up and do what you did by giving that baby a loving and stable home. I can only wish more people had such open minds and hearts! I work with families providing counseling and parenting classes, and I can honestly say that bio parents are not always the best placement, I am glad CPS did their job and prevented a possible tragedy. Thanks for sharing!

"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference"
Thanks for the responses, yes CPS was really doing there job i have a very wonderful caseworker. This past year has been exciting and exhausting but well worth it. I'm very glad i made the decision that i made and she is her with me instead of the system. next month we have a court hearing with someone called a "Masters" i'm guessing thats a type of judge? To TPR. Can't wait i'm also gonna change her name she only knows a nickname that i been calling her which is allie she doesn't know her birthname because i am planning to change it when it comes adoption day. But thanks again for listening

It is so good to hear of positive experiences in the CPS system. I work in the system and really needed a reminder that there ARE good outcomes sometimes! I applaud you for stepping up and taking responsibility for a child you didn't know and have obviously come to love!
Neat story, Thanks for sharing, I also adopted my Neice. Have adopted 2 children and are in the process of adopting 2 more, one is 4 months old and the other is 4 yrs old. Both private adoptions.
