hi all,
my name is Emily, im 26 yrs old, i live in Colchester, essex. my best mate (devildoll) told me about the site and how informative and supporting all you guys are... i was diagnosed with pcos in 1993 and life hasnt been great since that day, at first i was sent to many doctors and gynacology consultants, they couldnt explain why i wasnt having regular periods and when i did why they were so painful, i was bullied at school because i had hair on my face and discolouring on my under arms, neck and elbows which made me feel even more of an outsider, all i kept getting told was that i would grow out of it so not to worry, i just got married in may and my husband is so supportive of the condition and keeps telling me not to worry about having children he loves me for me but im so desperate for a baby and it saddens me to think we may never have one of our own. i didnt have a period for 2 yrs but thankfully ive had 4 this year but appartantly im not always ovulating, ive had so many tests but keep getting told the same thing "lose weight" and take metformin but they make me so sick.. i am a big girl and just find it so hard to lose the weight... any information you all could give me would be great

Welcome! You'll find lots of good advise around here. Some of the ladies might be able to tell you what they did to deal with and get past the side effects of Metformin. You'll find specific threads about weight loss, trying to conceive, body hair, Metformin, etc. Good luck!

Hi Emily! I have to take Metformin or my cycles will be all over the map. They either come twice a month or once in three months. Plus it stops the facial hair to a degree for me. I find that if I take 2 at a time w/ food and then one at night before bed w/ a snack I don't have so much of the awful side effects. Thankfully I'm not a diabetic so if the side effects are too much I stay at two that day. They really do help me but I know how you feel. They can give ya restroom issues and make you nauseated.
I'm ttc now- the Metformin has helped w/ the ovulation issue so we'll see if it works for me. I'm 28 and I could stand to lose 30 pounds. It's taken awhile to accept that the side effects are better than not having regular periods and a chance at being a mother. I also heard from my gyn that if the side effects were just too much to try the Glucophage XR (extended release) pills as those seem to not be so harsh on your system. Hope this helps.
I also have been doing a low glycemic index diet. That's the only diet I lose weight on since I'm insulin resistant. Good luck and welcome!

You have come to the right place. I got to say, I'm kinda partial to devildoll, so any cyster of hers is a cyster of mine!
I'm so sorry you had to go through all of that as a child. I know what it's liked to be picked on. I didn't begin to get those symptoms until I was in my early 20's, but there were other things that happened to me that caused a mulitude of being picked on. I matured at a rapid rate. At age 7 I began wearing a training bra and at age 10 I started my first period (Which I was already in a bra size of 36C). At 10 years old I looked like I could pass for someone between the ages of 14-16. My mom showed me how to properly wear make-up and since I looked the age, she allowed me to wear it. I was teased unmersifly. The kids in school called me a whore. Told me that i slept with the teachers. It was awful. I cried every day. I only tell you so you know that I really do understand.
As for the met, alot of the women here, inculding myself have found that first off, it's extremely important to start off slowly when beginning it. My dr started me out on 100mg a day, but advised me to start off with 1/2 a tablet 2 a day. and gradually work my way up. To always take it with a meal. Some cysters find taking it in the middle of their meal helps too. I take 1 pill with breakfast and 1 pill with dinner. For the first few weeks or so, I had the bathroom issues just like everyone, but eventually they subsided. I noticed when i started the IR diet (The Insulin Resistance Diet) that the bathroom issues beagn to subside. The diet is really good. I did a search for it and found it on Amazon.com and I found it at Barnesandnoble.com cheaper. I've lost 16lbs since being on this diet. It's really amazing and you don't feel cheated at all. I also exercise 3 times a week for 30 mins a session.
My energy level has gone up and I feel better than i have in a long time. I am also a very large woman, so i know how that feels. My dr has told me that in order for me to have a safe pregnancy, I really need to loose the weight. So, every time I see food i shouldn't have, I think of it as anit-baby food. If I eat, I'm 1 step farther away from having a baby. When i lose a pound, that a pund closer i am to having a baby. I've found it gives me great motivation.
I know this has been long, but I really want you to know that your not alone. I know how difficult this can be, if you ever need to talk, please feel free to pm me.
Welcome Emily! Angela is a sweetie, I'm glad she told you about this site.
I second the advice on the met, if you decide to take it again. Taking it right in the middle of the meal helped me the most, also lowering carbs and starting out at a lower dose and working up (500 mg to 1500 mg for me).
I take cinnamon which can help with blood sugar and cholesterol. I have been taking it since September and have had really good periods during that time. And fewer sugar cravings, which is a big deal for me!
I'm so sorry for the way you (and my other beautiful cysters) have been treated. We are here for you, and we love you just like you are.
Hugs
Jenny
