Hi everyone, my name is Anna. Hope you are all good? I'm 19 and not diagnosed with PCOS. The reason I became a member here is that I have a feeling that I may have PCOS and I dont know what exactly I should do. I dont want my doctor to think I'm a hypochondriac. Basically I need some advice and a big kick up the bum to go and get this sorted.
Some history for you: I come from a family of pale, thin people. We are not a hairy bunch.
Over the past... i guess it must be a year or so, I have developed quite a lot of dark body hair on my stomach. It used to only be a little line between my tummy button and bikini line, but recently it has got way worse and is sort of spreading outwards and getting darker and longer. It is also getting worse on the small of my back. And now I am started to get darkish hairs on my chest. These arent as bad as my stomach and back, but they are starting off the same way, if that makes sense? I was getting pretty down about this and confided in a friend. She has PCOS, and it had never occurred to me that the hair could be a symptom, but she said I should go to my doctor. I also have a constantly bloated stomach and in the past year I have got a weird darker patch of skin, on the underside of my arm by my armpit. However, my periods are pretty regular (if a bit on the long and heavy side, and very painful) and I am not particularly spotty. But something is not right. The more I read up on the symptoms of PCOS the more I see similarities to myself. I have also been clinically depressed since age 15. I could really do with some feedback or advice from anyone who has a moment. The hairyness in particular is really making me unhappy. Thanks for reading. love Anna x
Welcome to soulcysters, Anna. It does sound like you have a lot of typical PCOS symptoms. Browse around the site and look for the stickies at the top of each board. I would say go to your doctor with your new info and ask him to discuss it with you and maybe organise some tests. Any halfway decent doctor will be glad to see you are being proactive about your own health. Good luck.
hello Anna....Welcome.
You came to right place. I'm 30 years old and i started my pcos symptoms when i was around the same age as you are. PCOS is managable but sometimes it's hard to deal with all the side affects.
We're all here for you....Glad you found us

Hi there Anna, welcome. I know how you feel, it can seem scary having to go to a dr especially if other drs have dismissed your symptoms inthe past. However, after years of worring what was wrong with me I finally demanded my GP send me to a gynocologist, the gyno finally did the right tests, and as much as it sucks being diagnosed with PCOS it really is a relief to know why I had all the symptoms I did. I agree with dellwood, any good dr would rather see someone proactive.
But you have definately come to the right place, I'm new too, and there is so much info and support here. It is great not to feel alone.

Welcome Anna, I do think soulcysters is the place you should be. You have many of the typical symptoms. Your first priority should be informing yourself about PCOS and finding a GOOD doctor to diagnose you. Read about Metformin (many women take this to combat PCOS symptoms and Insulin Resistance). Just keep in mind, you may have to go to a few doctors to find a good one. I suggest either an endocrinologist or an obgyn. Do not let them tell you nothing is wrong, go in armed with information.
thank you all so much for your replies! I have booked an appointment with the doctor tomorrow, and i requested a female doctor. fingers crossed all is ok. xx
Welcome Anna! Glad you found SC. You'll find tons of valuable info and wonderfully supportive women to share your experiences with. Good luck at the doctor!
