Hi all, I have my first Endo appt this Thursday... I actually made the appt in Sept ( which I think is so ridiculous ) but anyway I am just so anxious to know what is going on. My Gyno ran the initial tests and I had the glucose tolerance test where I drank the highly sugary drink. She said the numbers were supposed to be between 5-55 after the drink and my number was over 300 !! That seems very scary to me but I do not know what it really means. Can any of you help with that?
I know I will find out all I need to know this Thursday but I found this site and I am sure it will be very helpful in the future.
Well, I'll be honest, I'm not sure what your results mean. I don't know if it means you are a diabetic or Insulin Resistant. But I would imagine if they were testing your glucose, then it would have to do with diabeties. I'm surprised you gyn didn't give you any info on what that means. That would scare anybody!!!
The women on here are great and very helpful and knowledgable. My suggestion would be to explore the other boards and see if you can find some more information. Or, if it is that scarey, I would just call my gyn back and say "hey, if my number was over 300, what does that mean?", and your dr should give you an answer.
I'm really sorry I coulnd't be of more help, but if you every need to talk to someone, I pretty good at listening. I know sometimes this can be a lot to take in. You can always PM me if you need to.
Welcome to SC!
I can only try and point you to some possible answers to your questions since I do not have the same experiences.
Check out the Stickies in the Diabetes Forum to try and find what the numbers in your GTT mean.
Good Luck.
Welcome Cyster!
I cant give you much advise on the test.... But I am sure someone can give you the answers your looking for. The Ladies on this site are so helpful and supportive. I am sure you will love it here!
Thanks for all of the help and the warm welcome's...
I actually had my Endo appt yesterday, she said I was very Insulin Resistant and she put me on Glucophage ( or I guess generic Metformin ) 2,000 mgs a day !!! Well I will be working up to that in four weeks, but I think that sounds kind of high considering my Dad has type 2 diabetes and he only takes 1,000 a day ... what do you guys think? How much are you taking?
Thanks,
Satine

It's not uncommon for IR people to take that much. I am actually only on 1,000 mg right now, but it's very possible that it will work up to that. Actually Met is the generic form of Glucophage. It's good that the doc is working you up to it gradually, it will allow your system to adjust to it. You might want to check out a book called "The Insulin Resistance Diet", it's very helpful in helping you adjust your eating habits and learning the proper way to eat. I found mine pretty cheap at barnesandnoble.com, it was a bit pricer at Amazon.
Hi Satine
I'm glad your appointment went well! 2000 mg is a reasonable dose for cysters. It's good that you are working up to that dose, that should help with side effects. Also I found it helped to take the met right in the middle of your meal and to do a low-carb diet. Hope this helps.
Best wishes hun
Hugs
Jenny

Hi Satine -
I am on the same dose of met as you 2000 mg. It can be really hard on your stomach at first, but the problems do go away eventually. After that, it really does help with IR and will probably help you lose weight.
Welcome to S/C - you'll love all the help and advise!!

I was diagnosed about 3 years ago. Although I knew I had PCOS long before it. I had a similar experience with my GYN. I took to GTT, and failed it miserably. Got a call from the doctor's office, and told me to stop drinking pop and watch my carbs immediately. It freaked me out completely. But, then I FINALLY got into to Endo, and he eased my mind a little bit. So, hang in there.
Hi all !! No, I have not started the met yet, I did actually go and get the perscription filled yesterday but I am not going to start taking it until after Thanksgiving...I have heard some say that if they eat high carb or something sweet that it makes the side effects, like diareah and stomach sickness, worse...is that what you girls have found? That is why I am not going to start taking until until after Thanksgiving because I know that I will be pigging out on high carb and desserts, ha ha :o)
My Endo called yesterday and set me up an appt with an Nutritionist to put me on a diabetic type diet ... any of you go to a nutrionist? I dont think my insurance pays for it so I hope it is worth it.
Thanks for all of your help -
Satine
