Hello! I'm new here and just officially diagnosed a few weeks ago. I've known I had something wrong with me since I was about 15 (I’m now 27). My cycles were just awful and none of my friends had anything similar. I started gaining weight rapidly and developed blood pressure and blood sugar problems. My doctor at the time just assumed I was eating too much and wouldn't listen to me. He told me to diet and stuck me on BC pills.
Blood sugar problems, blood pressure problems, hirsituism, depression, weight problems, joint problems, skin problems – I knew something wasn’t right. My hair was falling out. I got on the internet and researched it myself. That’s when I learned about PCOS. I knew that was what I had.
A few years later I tried to see another doctor about this. He also ignored what I said and would just treat symptoms. So I gave up and figured they might be right. Then I lost my health insurance and just had to deal with things on my own.
A few months ago I was able to get insurance. My BP was through the roof and my cycles were unbearable. They were lasting longer and were heavier. It was really getting in the way of my life. I made an appointment with a doctor to get my BP checked and under control. I brought up PCOS with him and he dismissed it. He said I was just fat and needed to diet. I had to tell him I needed a Pap just to get a referral to a GYN.
I was able to go to the OB-GYN that a friend recommended highly and told him that I thought I had PCOS. FINALLY found a doctor who listened! He went over the symptoms with me and asked me a few questions. I told him that I really want to conceive and he said that he didn’t think it would be a problem. I was so excited to hear that! He ran some tests and I had to wait two weeks for the results. I was on pins the entire time. Two days after my results I was in surgery (Aug 1, 08). I had a diagnostic laparacopy, hysteroscopy (sp?), D&C, and an ovarian wedge resection. After the surgery he came out and talked to my husband while I was in recovery – he told my husband “She was right about everything she thought was wrong”. It really made me feel good to know I was right and to have proof.
I went for my follow up visit on Tuesday. The Doc showed me pictures he took during the surgery. My ovaries were swollen twice the normal size. I wasn't shocked necessarily but I wasn't expecting that. He explained to me that I have some abnormalities in my womb but it shouldn’t be anything to worry about. He is now sending me to a specialist, an endocrinologist. I am waiting on my referral.
Right now I am just kicking back and recovering from the surgery. I have 3 incisions on my tummy that are hurting but I’m able to walk around. I just give out pretty quick. I have noticed that the hair growth on my face has slowed down a lot. I’m also sleeping better than I have in a long time and my hair isn’t falling out like it was. I am also just so excited at the thought of everything working out. I had almost given up hope at ever having a child of my own because of my health. Now it really seems like a possibility and that is so exciting!

"spril im glad to hear that your symptoms are easing away. what surgery did u have?"
I had a diagnostic laparacopy, hysteroscopy (sp?), D&C, and an ovarian wedge resection. From what I have read the OVR is outdated but it hasn't been very painful. I've had more pain out of the incisions.
