Question Hi - newbie from London here!

Hello everyone,

I'm Sam and and new to the forum.

I went to my GP a couple of months ago with the following symptoms:

Irregular periods
Excess hair - upper lip, chin, lower abdomen
Intermenstrual bleeding
Skin tags
Weight gain

She suggested PCOS. I had blood tests done and all came back clear, but she insisted that as i was symptomatic and should have a vaginal scan.

Had this done today and the results were as follows:

Heterogenous uterus 80 x 53 mm containing small intramural fibroids, largest 13mm

Both ovaries appear polycystic, however the ovarian volume appears to be within normal range. Left ovarian volume 8mls. Right ovarian not measured due to presence of dominant follicle.

What could this mean? Obviously I have to see my GP but they can't offer me an appointment until mid September.

Just wondering of any of you can shed any light - especially on the right ovary dominant folicle.

Also, I have seen a lot of reference to metformin as a treatment. Can anyone tell me if met is a first line treatment for PCOS?

Many thanks,

Sam

welcome to sc what id suggest is to write down everything that you want to ask/say to your dr so you dont forget.Thats what i always do.

My gp referred me to an endocrinologist (hormone dr) who helps me with my pcos.

Metformin isnt always used as the first treatment in pcos as it isnt strictly approved to be used as a treatment in the UK. But many of the time if you find a doctor who knows about pcos they do prescribe this. I agree with Eva that you should be refered to an endocrinologist for a suitable course of treatment. It might be metformin isnt best for you.

Obviously when your doctor see you they will give u a better explanation and decide whether you have pcos. When i was first diagnosed my hormones were all over where as now they are more within normal ranges but i still have pcos so yes it can happen like that

Good Luck
