My husband was searching around on the web for people with PCOS who have had success with Weight Watchers as I am wanting to join and wonder if Weight Watchers is an appropriate diet for someone who suffers with PCOS. And he came across this message board, and I just so happened to be sitting in the easy chair across from the computer and I started frantically screaming SAVE THAT WEBSITE!!!!!!! I was so excited!
Anyway, I am so happy to find you! There are a ton of messages, I'm sure I'll never get through them all in my lifetime, but its nice to know you're an active board, and I hope to stop by daily and visit.
I was diagnosed with PCOS. What happened was this. I always had a decent figure. I was never skinny really, but I was always a decent size. Doctors were happy, I was happy! Then, like overnight I gained this weight, like out of nowhere. Then I started getting the whole lip/chin hairs and the longggg dark hairs on my inner wrists and that line of hair going from your belly button downward, acne. And it was all weird. So I went to my doctor who did the whole blood test thing and it came back with a Positive for PCOS I guess is how they said it, I can't really remember now. So they of course basically said deal with it pretty much. Well, my Mom knew a lady who works for her who I guess they got to talking and to my Moms amazement, this lady has PCOS and see's a "Specialist". Well, I went to the "Specialist" (trying right now to remember his name, supposedly he is quite popular w/ PCOS, but for the life of me, I cant remember his name). Well this lady that works for the business, lives 2 1/2 hours from this doctor, but travels to him once a month, just for his treatment plan.
So anyway, I went to him and he of course did all the blood work again, etc. etc. And, he put me on Glucophage and a Diet Plan. I lost some weight, but not a whole lot because I am very stubborn you see. And, this Glucophage made me very sick to my stomach, I was constantly sick. So, I quit taking it because I'm stubborn and refused to put up with it. Not to mention I had just met some new guy and going out on dates was difficult and somewhat embarassing when I always had to make a "run for it". If you know what I mean! Had I only known this man, would end up being my husband one day who puts up with so much more, than me just taking bathroom breaks every 20 minutes, I would've kept it up. But, I didn't. So ---- Here I am...... wanting to know what to do next?
I've gained so much weight. My hair is so dreadfully thin, I'm constantly waxing my chin/lip hairs. Its too much and I'm ready to start doing something about it again. I went to my Family Doctor, who is not at all aggressive in wanting to treat this. The "specialist" is not on our new insurance plan, and I can't afford him out of pocket! He is PRICEY! So, can anyone suggest what "type" of doctor normally treats PCOS? Who understands it, who knows the appropriate medications. I will even put up with the Glucophage again, because I am desperate to lose this weight. I've never been so heavy, and I am not totally blaming PCOS. I do not eat the right foods, nor do I eat proper portions. So -- I am at fault too! But, I like to think PCOS makes the weight come on this much faster and this much more so.
Any success with Weight Watchers -- Anyone, Anyone?
And also, what type of Doctor do you go to? Ob/Gyn? Internist? G.P.?
Well - Im sure I've talked your ears off quite enough for one night. But, like I said I was so excited to find your group, and when I'm excited - I talk and talk........ Hehehe.
P.S-- I will have lots of questions regarding this PCOS and I love success stories. Even though I've been diagnosed for some time. I did unfortunately put it on the back burner in my life and I know - that is wrong. I know its dangerous, but I am now ready to kick butt! PCOS Butt!
For me, I just go to a regular old doctor and he pretty much does what I want him to do for me. With PCOS, I've found that I have to sort of take charge and figure things out on my own if that makes sense. Obviously, that doesn't work for everyone, but it's the best option I have right now and I'm pretty lucky to be able to do that.
I'm also in the midwest and man is it sticky! We're getting a/c installed on Friday, so woo hoo to that!
There's a section on diet stuff.... I'm sure they can help you with the WW stuff. I've never tried it, so I can't help. Sorry!

Welcome Mandy! It wasn't until I switched from a GP to an internal medicine doctor did I get diagnosed and am now in treatment. I didn't even know anything about PCOS before then, and have probably had it all my life. I did suspect I had diabetes though, and sought out a doctor that was experienced with patients with multiple problems. I have all the symptoms you describe, along with pre-diabetes, hypothyroidism, and sleep apnea. When you try the glucophage again, see if you can get an extended release prescription. I read it's better on the stomach.
You will absolutely love it here, and will be absorbing information like a sponge! It's great that you have such a supportive hubby, and hope you both will be posting here! Good luck!

Welcome Mandy. I lost 14 lbs in the last year on weight watchers. I did the online weight watchers and have since canceled my subscription so my weight coming off is slower than it should be but it has taught to eat much better and get more fiber in the diet. Oh- and portion control is much better now too. My neighbor goes to the ww meetings and is very successful with it.
I went to my ob/gyn (probably 4th one) before being dx with PCOS. Good luck on your searching.

Welcome - I am so glad you found us. I have met some of the most genuine amazing people on these boards.
You asked about doctors...I personally have been seeing a Reproductive Endocrinologists not because TTC but because he specialized in PCOS. He was the only one to come up with my dx after literally and I Sh*t you not 10 normal doctors, endo's and Ob/gyn's. Its been a long haul for me being dx.
Also, I must have tried literally ALL the diets out there and I'm only 24...Wieght watchers never worked for me but everyone is different. I have gone to a Nutrionists also specializing in PCOS (She works along side of my RE) and She has helped me TONS AND TONS.
Anyhu, nuf of my babbling If you need any help with anything PM me or just ask anyone of these other wonderful systers Have a great day!

We all see different types of doctors. There are some OB/Gyn's who are knowledgeable with PCOS. Others see endocrinologists or reproductive endocrinologists (there is a difference), and some people are ok with their Family doctor.
As for the Glucophage....I don't know how long ago you were on it, but they now have an extended release version that many people experience far less symptoms on. Also, I don't know how much time you gave it, but many of us adjust to the meds and the symptoms lessen and sometimes disappear after a prolonged time on the gluc. It could be worth trying again!
Good luck with everything! If you need anything, we are always here for you!

welcome to soul cysters
you can find out alot info from talking in here. i go to my regular dr and they are helping me treatment. they are also sending me to endocronogist. i get the support in here when i have some thing bothering me. its not all about pcos it about every thing. you can make some great friends.
I *can* be a picky eatter. I'll eat just about anything pretty much, but my problem is, I burn out on certain foods quickly. But - I'm at the point Ill eat anything to lose the weight. Except this horrible diet my Mother in law goes on every once in awhile. I think it is called the "Cabbage Soup" diet if anyone has ever heard of it. Sounds like straight up......... well anyway! LOL
You know I have heard that if you continue on with the glucophage, the side effects eventually go away or ease up. I never got that far. I've heard of the extended release tablets as well - they sound interesting - maybe worth a try! But, I thought I heard it only was available "UP TO" 1000mg of it? I'm pretty sure when I went to this specialist the mg. dosage was quite a bit higher than that. And, Id like to do the same thing, since I did lose weight. I wish I remembered how much, so I could *request* it!
