Default hi, thin cysters; so glad i found you

Hello, I am Angela and today I have become a soul cyster; I was initially writing to the general message board and other kind solucysters reindirected me to you, because i have become desperate on trying to find adequate diet for me; i was diagnosed PCOS at the age of 20, I am 32 years old now; for some time I' ve been on a pill, but i really didn't felt well and it helped me regoalrize my cycle only during taking it; i was recently told by my new doctor that i should take care of my nutrition and that is the first time since i am visiting doctors (15 years) that someone points out the importance of this issue; doing a lot of research on Internet i found a thousaond of diets , like Atkins and low-carb diets BUT I DON'T NEED TO LOSE WEIGHT! I just didn't know what to apply to me. i am 175 meters tall and I have 55 kg; so I am what is usually told very thin. All of these diets are concentrated on loosing weght; I've reduced carbs in the last two weeks and i lost 2 kg; but i really don't want to loose weight!!!
Help me with your tips and advices, please, which diet should I follow and how. I live in Belgrade, Serbia so it is not possible for me to get books like PCOS Diet book or others.
The symptoms I have are irregular cycles ( from 23 - 60 days, sometimes even i don't get peridos for three months) and acne on the upper chin ( that aggravate before and during cycle);
Somebody of you talked abot some herbal supplements; i've been trying with the calendualae tea but it didn't heldped at all);
Many thanks in advance to all of you and I hope someone will answer ...
Angela

Welcome Angela! As far as diet goes I would watch refined flour foods such as those carbohydrate foods prepared with white refined flour as well as cut sugar as much as possible. These cause insulin to surge. Keep carbs to whole grains and only one serving at a meal. I try to do the IR diet and don't usually count carbs anymore just make sure I only eat one carb. food at a meal. I then eat protein and fruit or vegetables with it. Some examples are one small potato with meat and other veggies. One sandwich with whole grain bread meat and cheese. Small portion of pasta with meat and sauce. Dairy food is also a good source of protein so I don't count it as carbs (except ice cream of course) This helps me to keep the carbs at a moderate level but I don't lose weight. It is probably healthier too!

We're glad you're here. You will learn many great tips and tried and true advise here. Learn all you can and you can advise your doctor about your treatment in the future.
Chris

Angela,

Welcome! I'm not sure why the doc reccomended to eat carbs separately from protein. I think most here would suggest the opposite. By always eating protein with your carbs you will slow the insulin & glucose rise. It keeps your blood sugar more stable. The general rule in the IR diet is to eat 1 serving protein with every 2 servings carb.

I'm a thin cyster who has given up sugar & try to eat only complex carbs. It's not easy but I haven't lost weight on it. I make a point to eat plenty of protein & veggies.

Best of luck to you!

Hi Angela,

Welcome to SoulCysters! I'm glad you found us! This is a really wonderful site, with a lot of very supportive, knowledgeable ladies who are facing many of the same issues as you are.

I agree with what Chris and Brenda have said; a good diet approach is to always couple carbs with protein. The other thing I personally try to do is to eat organic/natural foods -- e.g., fruits and veggies grown without pesticides, and meat/dairy who are not given hormones. I'm not perfect about it - probably achieve this about 80% of the time - but I think it helps. While I think managing carb intake is absolutely key, I've also read that some doctors/researchers theorize that PCOS is caused/influenced by exposure to toxins. So the more we can do to minimize the toxins in our diet, the better! I think it's espcially critical to avoid meat and dairy products that contain hormones. Our bodies are out-of-whack enough in that department; we certainly don't need the additional stimulation there.

You may have noticed this already, but there is an alternative remedies board with a lot of information on other herbs and supplements that are helpful to some PCOS women. So you may find some options there which are different from what you tried previously. The difficult thing I think we all face is that there is no magic cure-all, and what works for one lady, may not work for another. I do think, however, being attentive to diet is important for every one of us!

Hope this information is somewhat useful to you. Definitely keep us posted on your learnings and your progress! Look forward to chatting with you more.

Best wishes
Lissa
