If you can affor to you really should save up and look into electroloysis. it's much better than laser and is permanent as long as your hormones are under control. It's much better than wasting $$ on laser that isn't, at least as far as I Know.

I have been shaving since I was 14.
I've been shaving since I was 13 -- and I just wish that I'd realised as a teenager what I know now.

Except when we're on vacations in our cabin, I'm clean-shaven whenever I leave the house. However, we have a number of close (male) friends who sometimes stay overnight with us when passing through the area and a few years ago DH and I decided to tell those friends that I shave every day -- so that I wouldn't have to do a constant concealing act around the house, shaving more than once a day and not moving around the house in the morning until I'd shaved. It was one of the best things we ever did -- and wonderfully liberating for me. Not one of them were in any way nasty or embarassing about it. They were all interested and all very nice about it. And it was as if they were grateful for the privilege of being told about it. They've all seen me bristly and I think most of them have probably seen me shaving (I use a rechargeable electric razor). These guys know what I'm like and the fact that they accept me and we have a great relationship is a great encouragement to me. Every one of them totally OK about the fact that I have male-type beard growth. Guys seem to be quite OK about a woman with beard growth.

The last few weeks have made me think a lot about how other people see me.

Normally in October we have three weeks' family vacation at our cabin and during that time I don't normally shave at all. In the later part of the vacation if I wear sexually ambiguous clothes and keep my hair covered I think that though the people in the few stores in the neighboring communities know I'm a female, any outsider would take me for a male.

This October, however, while the rest of the family were on vacation I was on a business trip to Singapore and New Zealand and for these business trips I have to put on a much more conventional female appearance which means that in addition to keeping my face clean-shaven I also have to wear business skirts which means shaving the whole length of my legs. And I also wear molded bras to give at least the appearance of normal breasts. There really couldn't be a much bigger contrast than the difference between that very feminine appearance when I'm away on business on the one hand and the "real me" normally to be found in October -- bearded, flat-chested and with legs hairier than most males.

Now, I do wonder what those guys who stared at my clean-shaven legs during that business trip would have thought if they knew how hairy they are naturally? And I wonder what the guys who eyed up what they took to be my "rack" when I was overseas would have thought if they knew that the molded bra was actually empty and that I don't have breasts at all? Frankly, I'm happier with the guys who have seen me with a day's stubble on my face, with my legs with months' worth of hair growth and who have seen my chest as it really is -- female nipples on a flat chest. They've seen me as I am and they accept me. And the fact that I know they've seen my beard growth and that they've seen my chest means I don't need to worry about what they might notice or discover.

Silva! I can't believe your boyfriend said that!!!! If mine would say anything remotely like that, he'd be gone!!!

And p.s. you girls crack me up talking about sharing mens electric razors with the boyfriend!! LOL

My bf claims he doesn't notice it on me, but I'm sure he's just saying that to avoid hurting my feelings.

I just use Barbasol (cheap walmart crap) for shaving cream and my face looks like hell.... I need to go back and get laser done again!

I think it's time to invest in expensive shaving cream because make up can't hide all the redness and scarring from shaving since I was 15. I just use cheapo razors because the ones I buy can get nice and close if I press hard enough.......

And then I end up with a nice bloody and sore face. It's glorious (not!)

Do any of you suggest any specific brands of disposable razors or some wonderful shaving cream that will reduce bumps?

I've actually started using Bikini Zone gel on my face and it works very well! The closeness of the shave is the same, but my face doesn't feel as irritated as it used to do afterward. Nivea also has a male moisturizer for after shaving that soothes irritation. It's also UNSCENTED! So you won't smell like a man. It's wonderful!

I did laser treatment and it only held off the facial hair for a short while... My doc then gave me spiro and said to use it then do laser. The spiro alone has taken away alot of the thick black hairs and slowed them down ALOT.
Do you ladies take spiro ? I have been told that the reason laser wont work long term is b/c you have to treat the hormone imbalance first ( with spiro) then the laser removal should work..

Why not, if we've got comparable beard growth to theirs?

I never really tell anyone but it's hard to hide, especially when I carry around my dad's old electric shaver in my bookbag at school just in case one of my friends want to go out for the evening. I gotta go get in my car & hide myself in there for a few minutes and shave the stubble away.

I did take Spironolactone for a while but man that stuff was evil to me...it helped with the hair (made it lighter so no one could really see it) but it made me as sick as a dog. It raised my BP (since it is a BP medicine and I don't have any BP problems) and I was very nauseous every single day for at least a couple of weeks and I said, "there is no way I'm taking this stuff anymore...I'll deal with the facial hair, it's better than being sick all the time and not being able to eat anything."

So I shave still...I haven't told my gynecologist yet that I went off of the Spironolactone...dunno why I haven't said anything yet, it's been a few months since I went off of it. Anyway, I use my dad's electric shaver all the time and I use makeup and I pluck a whole lot.

You make a good point that the medications can be worse than the beard growth. It's worth considering getting a new rechargeable men's-type electric razor when you can afford it, but in the meantime I reckon what you're doing is a very sensible answer to the problem. Did you have to ask your dad for the razor? I started shaving by borrowing my dad's electric razor without his knowledge to shave my moustache when I was 13.

Yeah, my dad knows about the 'hair growth on my face' problem so he didn't mind letting me use one of his...he bought him a new one this past x-mas and just let me have his old one. It's not the best shaver but it gets the work done whenever I need it. It's kinda hard to do it in school since those shavers are a bit loud when you turn them on...that's why most of the time I go to my car. I admit, it does get old after a while but it's better than using an actual razor and getting cuts.

Hey, that's great -- your dad knows about it and he's sympathetic. It's good having someone who knows and is sympathetic -- especially when it's your dad.

The Philips Norelco rotary models are about the quietest available. Some others are very noisy.

Agreed. To my way of thinking a good rechargeable men's-type razor is the ideal answer for women with beard growth -- and there are probably far more of us than you'd imagine.

Hey ladies, here's my 2 cents..have been shaving for about 2 years now and havent yet had any cuts or serious irritation. I use a method that's a little unconventional - plain water! I just wet my chin and use a disposable shaving stick with triple blades or more and it works well for me.
