I went for a physical to renew my visa (stamp in passport not the credit card LOL) and my blood pressure was 150/90.
I remember when I first came (about 2 yrs ago) my doc in the States was worried because my blood pressure was "pre-hypertension" every time I saw her. I also remember that every doc I go to mentions that my blood pressure seems to be "a little high."
And . . . now that I have lost nearly 50 pounds and exercise several times a week, I actually do have high blood pressure.
When I asked my OBGYN about it, he told me I needed to speak with a doc in the Cardio section of the Outpatient Clinic at the hospital.
So . . . what do i do next? Should I get a blood pressure monitor and track it and take that data with me to the Cardio doc? Do I just need to go see the Cardio doc first?
Clueless,
amanda
NOTE: I posted this over in "what's on your mind?" but no one offered answers there . . . so thought I would try in this topic. Hope that is ok.

Maybe I should go see an endocrinologist . . . . do they deal with hypertension?
If so . . . then he could help with PCOS and the high blood pressure at the same time.
Hmmmmm . . . . any thoughts? Suggestions? Advice?

I suggest anybody with high or borderline high BP readings buy a home monitor. They are very easy to use. Write your readings down and show your doctor. If you monitor you own BP, you can find out if you have white coat syndrome and your BP shoots up at the doctor's office. If you are consistently 150/90, you probably need to be on BP med. Recent studies show that for the long term health of your arteries you need to keep your BP below 120/80. My doctor pushes the DASH diet to help BP, but it is a little low on protein for us IR folks. Just type DASH diet into a search engine and you'll find info about it.

Ok, so is there a good or a better time to check blood pressure? Should it be the same time everyday?
Thanks,
amanda

I would try checking it different times on different days (or several times a day to start out), just to see how your BP varies during the day. You should expect your BP to fluctuate. For example, getting up in the morning is very stressful on the body, so many people's jump up then. I'm not saying that you need to check it three times a day everyday forever. Once you are aware of how it fluctuates, my doctor said checking it once a week is OK. Unless it stays consistently high, there's no need to worry. I can actually tell when my BP is high (I feel tense and jittery), but many people can't.

I am under the Cardiologist for my high blood pressure now... over the years I have had sporadic episodes where my BP had shot up, but the Endo team I am under were not worried about it... last year when my episodes of chest pain were hard to control I was referred to him and as a result of my BP staying high and high choesterol he changed some of my cardiac meds and increased my cholesterol meds.

ditto to everyone else's advice on this thread. . .I, too, have "white-coat" hypertension, and while the nurse was a little concerned that my blood pressure was too high, especially for someone my age, and especially because I'm overweight (it was 138/96), the doctor knows me and my anxiety problems, and suggested that I buy an at-home monitor. Well, I got the fancy digital kind that keeps a memory of your readings, so the next time I went to the doctor, I brought it in and showed her my readings. And at home, they're usually at or below normal (sometimes as low as 100/60), except when I'm really stressed or anxious, and that is when they shoot up. OK, that's enough. Hope I helped.
