Question High Blood pressure.

I took my BP @ Walmart and it was 168 over 84.
The results says that is bad.
Ok. So what kind of diet should I follow?
Low salt? Does salt matter?
What do you recommend?

ETA: I am not going to the doc; I know its bad and I will manage it myself w/o meds.

ETAA:
I was hungry and made a bake potatoes. Sounds harmless. Then i decided to put some salsa and sour cream on it instead of butter.
I was HEAVY on the salsa. How could it be harmful.
Well after I finished I looked at the nutrition on the way to the frig and WOW 260mil of sodium PER SERVING.
I had about 3/4 cup.
I cannot believe there was that much sodium in it!
I had just blown the whole day worth of sodium!

i have high bp, too. And try to limit the salt i use. I use other things in cooking instead - like garlic, lemon juice, etc instead.

What id suggest is to have some more bp readings - make a note of them, and then let you dr know.

Default Hi there

If I were you, I wouldn't rely to much on this one reading. Several things can affect your bp... in fact just walking around walmart for a little while can elevate it somewhat and I'm not sure how accurate those drug store machines are anyway. Personally... I hate Walmart with a passion, so I know just being there would cause my bp to go up! I'd get one or two more readings just to be sure. In any event, for high BP, it's good to limit salt, eat a healthy diet and exercise... just like every other ailment!

Also, 260mg of sodium is not the daily limit!! The RDA for sodium is 2.3g or 2300 mg, so the salsa isn't the bad guy! In fact, it's usually a very health snack option, so keep it up!

Good Health to you!

Thanks.
I have been told twice that my BP was elevated but did nothing about it.
So I think I will take the proactive choice this time.
I am pretty sure it was reliable results.

AKA.
The salsa was 260mil for 2 tbs; I had 3/4 a cup.
And from the research I have done on the net they say avoid salsa unless homemade.

The thing is I NEVER use salt!!! NEVER!
I am guessing its from the fast food and canned foods I eat and partly hereditary as my dad has it too.

I hate salt, like adding extra I never do and I don't/can't eat foods that taste too salty, yet I have BP problems but I am on medication. Definitely most frozen meals and cans do have way to much salt, exercise even just 30 minutes a day can lower BP, if you smoke that can raise it, and definitely hereditary plays a HUGE factor. I would definitely get a monitor which can be about 20-30$ at a drugstore. Your top number is high but your bottom number isn't much higher than recommended which is 120/80 but it's your bottom number you have to worry about more so says my doctor. Like the previous poster said just walking around wal-mart could have done it also, exercise and diet and try to "destress", also drinking more water helps too, and that's all I got with out medication although I wouldn't say yours is high enough yet to worry about a dr anyway. Good Luck!

I'm not sure why you don't want to go to the doctor. High blood pressure is very dangerous. It can cause a stroke. If it stays high over a long period of time, even if you don't have a stroke, it can cause your heart muscle to harden, kidney disease, or an aneurysm. There are lots of blood pressure medicines that are very cheap, and one visit to your primary car physician shouldn't be too expensive.
Doctors usually recommend the DASH diet if your only ailment is high blood pressure. I think it's too high carb, low fat for an optimal PCOS diet, but it does teach you about reducing sodium.

I don't have high blood pressure problems but I take Odorless Garlic Pills (1000mg/day) and it's supposed to help lower your blood pressure.
