Default high Blood Pressure

Does anyone else here have high blood pressure? Is it common amongst women with PCOS?

I do...I'm 5 ft 6 and overweight at approx 180lbs - I'm 24. I've had some kidney tests and all came back clear. However, I'm borderline anaemic. Just wondered if anyone else has this problem...

Thanks!

Unhappy Hbp

I've had high blood pressure for as long as I can remember. I've read quite a few things that say the HBP is a common co-mingled condition with PCOS/IR/diabetes, etc.

I know it's not fun. I'm on two different BP medications to keep mine down...but literally, I can remember being a teenager and having the docs constantly haranging me about my blood pressure. AND I was really active as a teen, have been tall (6'), and lost weight in my early college days. I don't get it. Probably doesn't help that I have a family history of it either...so I'm sure that has an affect on the numbers too.

My .02,
Linda

i was diagnosed with high bp when i was 12, and have been recently put back into the care of the specialists because it is getting high again. it really sucks. they've put me on a bp pill that will harm the baby if I get pregnant, but we are not TTC anyways. They want my bp down ALOT before we are allowed to TTC...
its so frustrating with BP issues!

Hi. I was diagnosed in May last year with high blood pressure. Mine was severely high and my GP always says how much I scared her when she took my BP that day. I am also on two different types of meds for my BP and it's well under control - if anything, it's been a little low over the past month or so (low for me anyway!!). I was diagnosed with PCOS after my GP discovered my high BP and when I read everything I could find about PCOS, it also said high BP, high cholesterol, depression and insulin resistance - everything I am being treated for at the moment. PCOS sucks doesn't it??

I'm 5'9" and 110lbs and have high blood pressure. My obgyn said it could be directly linked to PCOS. My primary care doctor said not a chance. So, I trust my OB over my general practitioner, my primary care doesn't really know anything about PCOS. He refused to approve an U/s to see how bad my cysts are because he said, "I was young and healthy."

But hbp runs on my fathers side. Everyone has hbp, all the relatives.

high bp has been a reality for me since age 25. i also take 2 different types of medication to control it. i've even lost 83lbs and still haven't been cleared to stop taking it. it's frustrating to be so young and having to deal with it. you are definitely not alone!

thanks for the replies ladies. you're all such a great support network! i'm definitely going to raise the PCOS link to high bp at my next GP appointment. will be interesting to see what she makes of it. I think I'll be forcing some IR testing too...

I would definitely get your IR checked. Luckily for me, my GP caught mine early enough before it was able to develop into full blown Type 2 Diabetes. I now have the chance to turn it around.

I also have high blood pressure. I've had it (that I've been medicated for anyway) for three or four years. I've had the kidney tests, the blood work, the who knows what other tests done. Aside from my family history, my GP just couldn't put his finger on what was causing it at such a young age. I'm 5'2 and 155lbs. He never once said my weight was a factor in it, especially after the whole panel of blood work showed nothing. Anyway, I started seeing my RE in June and when he asked about my high BP, I said I had a family history. He added to it that I clearly had PCOS (apparently, I've had PCOS since I was 17 yet NO doctor ever mentioned it and when you're young, you don't really try to put labels on everything) and that a diagnosis of PCOS definitely carries the possibility of high BP. Anyway, I take Labetalol HCL, which is very safe in pregnancy, not that I'm pregnant yet. But it is super common for women with PCOS to have blood pressure issues.
