Default High Protein Alternative to Cream Sauce

Last night we made some of the high fiber herb fettucine, and we tried a new sauce. My Dh stumbled upon it by accident, and I'm used to feeling horribly guilty for eating rich pasta sauces because they are cream and butter based, but now I don't have to! Lots of good fats (unsaturated) that are good for the heart, instead of the bad ones that go straight to the hips.

Put 1-2 tbsp of olive oil, minced onion and fresh basil in a hot sauce pan until the onions are carmelized. Then add 2 cups cottage cheese, a few drops of lemon juice, 2 tbsp brown sugar and garlic salt to taste. Stir over heat until the cottage cheese melts and the ingredients make a smooth consistency. This served all 4 of us, and the kids had seconds!

Thank you thank you! I can't wait to try this recipe. I've been looking for a good alternative to the cream-butter sauces.
Thanks!

I'm going to try this. It sounds really good.

I'm on the lookout for lowish fat; healthy recipes at the moment!

Christy, Since "we've" opened a package of cottage cheese, here's another way to use it up:

I took 1/2 cup of cottage cheese and added 1 TB lemon juice; 1TB milk; and I added some dill mix (part of a gift of spices I received--you could add whatever your heart desires--or what you have in the cupboard).
I blended it well and served it as a dip for veggies. I have seen recipes calling for 1TB of mayonnaise/dressing as well--this will probably change the taste a bit. Even without the inclusion of the mayo, the dip is quite edible. The texture is thick so that it does stick nicely to your veggie. I suppose one could thin it out slightly, maybe that's where the mayo comes in...anyway
Since I dislike sour cream, this is a pretty good substitute.
