My recent bloodword showed that I have high triglycerides (268). Does anyone here have this problem? If so, are there any dietary changes I can make to lower them?
Here's some info I was able to find for you on high triglyceride levels:
What about treatment for high triglycerides?
The latest guidelines (May, 2001,) for the first time, recommend treating patients who have elevated triglyceride levels. This recommendation is based on recent analyses strongly suggesting that triglycerides are indeed an independent risk factor for coronary artery disease. The decision to treat is generally based on the triglyceride levels themselves. Normal triglyceride levels are less than 150 mg/dL. Borderline high levels are 150-199 mg/dl. High levels are 200 - 499 mg/dL, and very high triglyceride levels are greater than 500 mg/dL. For people with borderline or high triglyceride levels, treatment should emphasize weight reduction and exercise. Drugs are recommended for people with very high triglyceride levels. Most people who need treatment for high triglyceride levels have metabolic syndrome X.

I have high triglycerides. My doctor told me to lose weight. I have about 40 pounds to lose. I know when I lost weight a few years ago, my cholesterol went down to normal.
I wouldn't personally take any medicine for cholesterol. Some of the common medicines have nasty side effects that could permanently affect your health. Not worth the risk.
You need to eat a healthy carb/low fat/high lean protein diet. And exercise regularly. That helped me!

I lowered my cholesterol from 222 to 191 by losing 60 pounds. My triglycerides went down a little bit from 150 to 135. My good cholesterol barely moved and my bad went wayyyyy down. My doctor said that the reason the triglycerides didn't go down as much was from lack of exercise. I pretty much let the Met take my weight down and didn't exercise regularly. So now, I am adding in the exercise and we'll see what happens. I could stand to lose about 60 more pounds. Good luck to you!!

To lower triglycerides, in addition to exercise and healthy diet, you need to cut out sugar. This is what my nutritionist had me do to lower mine. It worked but then I went back on sugar so I am sure they are up again.

Triglycerides do seem to be tied to sugar. I started Met and lost 30 lbs and mine went down a little, but my cholesterol went up! The doctor insisted I try cholesterol medicine. She said sometimes people cannot overcome metabolism and genetics with diet. Apparently I'm in that category.

Sometimes high triglycerides can be linked to insulin problems. Are you IR or diabetic? I'm neither, and I eat a low-sugar, low-fat, vegetarian diet and go to the gym 5 days a week and my triglycerides and cholesterol are still high. I'm on my third medication but mine aren't responding very well. I'm in that category of just having bad genes, according to my doctor.
