I just wanted to see if any of you also had high triglycerides (sp)? My family doctor told me that hey were high about 4 years ago when I went to get checked for diabetes. I also have an issue with my liver enzymes.
I want to the low-carb diet but I don't "need" anymore protein in my body. Am I way off here, but you have to have one or the other? Maybe I am just ocnfused?
Can anyone suggest anything? I plan on getting treated for all this stuff when my insurance kicks in, in April.
I would appreciate any feedback...thank you!!!

Do you have hypertension also? My dad is currently being checked for syndrome X, due to him being overweight with hypertension, high triglycerides and high insulin.
I see in your sig that you are untreated currently, an Endo would be able to help you with this.

I had slightly raised Triglycerides and also my overall cholesterol was OK, but I had too much "bad" cholesterol and too little "good" cholesterol (can't remember which one is called HDL and which one is LDL!!). I had my blood lipids rechecked recently after a more than a year of taking metformin, and everything is now back in the normal range.
Thanks for the replies y'all...
I have no idea if I have hypertension. As soon as my insurance kicks in, I am going to get checked for everything under the sun!
This is driving me crazy......

HDL is good, LDL is bad (I remember cause you want High HDL, and Low LDL). I'll find out in a week.
Also, when I looked up tryglycerides, found one that suggested high tryglycerides might be a result of undiagnosed diabetes - not surprising considering all the IR problems folks here have.

I have the same issues, I have been diagnosed w/ high triglycerides and cholesterol is bad and also my liver enzymes keep coming back off. Not severe but enough docs are wondering, they did a ultrasound and it looks great they said. They changed my cholesterol meds again thinking it was medication still nto sure im frustrated so havent been back.
I also have diabetes but am diet controlled as of this point.
no hypertension though thank god.
not sure if any of this helps but your not alone.

My Triglyc. are also very high, yet my bad chol. is in normal range, but my good chol. is low. When I talked to my regular dr. about this a few weeks ago - he told me it's part of the PCOS. So along with my three bp med's and my progesterone, I might need to take something for this as well. Does it every end?
I am currently being checked for "syndrome X" too . . . from what I understand, the hallmarks of this disorder are insulin resistance, high triglycerides, high bad cholesterol, and obesity. I know I have the last one, and a strong family history of others, in addition to a family history of diabetes.
Sounds a lot like PCOS to me. I've heard some say they are the same thing.
Anyway, if the tests don't go well, my doc will prescribe met, which will help not only for insulin but in other areas as well. She's also talked about the need to "protein load" to avoid sudden spikes in insulin levels and avoiding "unopposed carbs." Usually when there is a problem with insulin, they talk about limiting carbs, not protein, even though cholesterol levels might be high. Insulin levels do a lot to through our other levels out of wack.
Hope this helps!

I have never been tested for IR, but my Gynae prescribed it anyway on a "let's see if it helps" basis. And it HAS helped, not only with my cholesterol / triglycerides, but also with menstrual problems
Kat posted some great stuff about IR at What is insulin resistance? (pcos mentioned) There is stuff in there about alternative remedies, including vitamins you can take, and what kind of diet is best. I don't know any way of diagnosing it without a blood test, but it never hurts to exercise more and eat better, and increase your intake of certain nutrients.

I just wanted to share with you that if you have high Triglyceride levels, you really ought to get tested for Insulin Resistance. I recently had the test done and my Insulin Levels were WAY out of whack. IR doesn't mean you have diabetes and it *isn't* PCOS. They are different diagnosis (PCOS involves cystic ovaries, IR can be found in both men and women and it comes from not being able to process Insulin correctly).
To do the test you have to devote 2 hours. Fasting all night, blood drawn in the morning. Then you drink a bottle of glucose (think Orange Crush ) then you get tested after 1/2 hour and again after 1 hour. If your Insulin levels remain high after one hour you show the classical signs of IR. Especially if your Tri are high as well. A blood sugar test will NOT show if you have insulin resistance. You need to have the 2 hour test. Once you get insurance you might want to ask your doctor to have the tests run on you. .
Also, I just bought the book Insulin Resistance Diet. I haven't even opened it yet *chuckle*. I'll let you know what I think of it!
Best wishes!
world peace,
marykate
