Question High TSH

Hello, I hope someone can help me because I'm really confused.

My TSH is 6.84 MU/L, so my doctor checked my T4 FREE which is 13.5 PMOL/L. Based on that, she said that my thyroid is fine.

I'm wondering if this is true. If it is, what could cause such a high TSH? Do I need additional tests to determine if there is in fact a problem?

I'm sooooo confused.

Thanks

Oh good lord. With a TSH like that your thyroid is most definitely NOT fine. Your doc is on drugs! Go get a second opinion ASAP.

There is a list of doctors here which are thyroid-friendly, maybe you can find one in your area?

When I was first diagnosed last year as hypothyroid, my TSH was 6.56 but my T4 was well within normal range (I forget right now exactly what it was, but the TSH always sticks in my head). My doctor put me on Synthroid, but later began to doubt my need for meds because there was no improvement in my symptoms. We discussed the possibility that I might have a pituitary problem, which was later ruled out through extensive testing. So, I'm in the same boat. I've been on the lowest dose of Synthroid now for just over a year, and my TSH has dropped, T4 has remained high/normal, but the symptoms that brought me to the doctor haven't improved much at all. I don't really know why my TSH would be high but T4 would be normal. I would suggest that you get your pituitary checked (just various blood tests for prolactin and some other hormones that are produced or affected by the pituitary). Most likely it will come back fine, like mine did, but that's probably the area that you want to focus on. Good luck!

Thank you for your advice.

I've thought I had a thyroid problem forever. When I was 16, my doc checked and said yes I'm hypo, but because I was so young, he wanted me to come back every 3 months for blood tests, so he could monitor it before treating me. Fine, I did that and *magically* my thyroid fixed itself. But the symptoms never went away.

My new doc says I have PCOS, but I'm not so sure...maybe I'm just in denial I will definitely look into the pituitary aspect of it.

Thanks again.
