Ok so I was reading in the PCOS article section about the extra fat in our(some of our) beliies can be contributed to chronic inflamation.....I have also noticed that many cysters state their PCOS symptoms were better or almost gone when pregnant and shortly there afterwards(I'm assuming that it is because our bodies realize Hey she IS a woman)
Now my question -
My aunt has severe ruhmetoid arthritis(sorry if I messed up the spelling on that one) anyway she has 5 kids and she said that her arthritis was at it's best (no pain and was able to do much more) when she was pregnant. So the inflamation thing and pregnancy might actually be a good link to helping PCOS? What is your take on the situation?
Just curious it seems it should be at least explored somewhat?

Inflamation is directly related to hormones.(Just as PCOS is)
Rue arthritis is a very BAD autoimune disease that has no cure, only few treatments that don't work on everyone.
Fybermyalgia is very simular to RA. But it does not have markers found in the blood work.
This causes many issues for people(like me) who suffer with this disease.
Just imagine the pain you feel when you stub your toe on a piece of furniture. Now imagine how it would feel to have that pain just because someone pats you on the back!
I feel as if I have bruises on every part of my body.
I have found some of my triggers for the varing levels of pain(Inflamation) Specific foods like cakes, cookies and candies are the worse. I can have a reaction within minutes or as late as days later. The best way to discribe these reactions are like an allergy.
So when I feel inflamation getting worse, I will start an antihistimine routine along with IBprophen, Tylanol and Robaxin to help control the pain.
Pregnacy has been well documented in relieving the effects of many health issues like RS and endometreosis. The main reasoning is the hormone changes.
Diabeties is another form that effects or can be effected by hormones. Isulin itself is a estrogen based hormone. So the link of inflamation with those with diabeties is also very apparent. Many people with insulin resistance are more apt to have cronic pain problems.
It is all linked to each other.
There are meds available that makes the body think it is pregnant. But they can only be used for short term(No more than 6 months at a time with a min 6 months between each treatment) So as a society...we are still very far away from a reliable treatment.

One of the main reasons that RA gets better during pregnancy is that in pregnancy, there is a shift in the immune system. The part of the immune system (Th1) that overreacts and attacks the joints in RA gets reduced in pregnancy, to protect the baby from the immune system seeing it as 'foreign'. It is the same reason why allergies often get worse in pregnancy, because when one part of the immune system gets reduced (Th1), the other part that creates allergic reactions increases (Th2).
Also, in RA, they have found that a major cause is a reduction in two sugars (glyconutrients) called fucose and galactose, causing an autoimmune reaction against the joints. It's complicated, but I have a research article on this topic, it's very interesting, especially as replacing these two sugars has shown benefit in reducing the severity of RA. If you want a copy emailed to you, just let me know.

Please email me that article. I would love to give my aunt something concrete. She has been in a wheel chair from RA sinve she was in her mid 20's and she is in her early 40's now. She is from a lower income area (has 5 kids and rececntly divorced....)and was pregnant 5 times and that is the only time she found any relief. I'd love to pass something as simple as "sugars" onto her. I'll PM you my email address

Cool to find this thread - I was just wondering about how the pregnancy/allergies link worked. AussieJul if those sugars you talked about affect RA, would they also affect other aspects of the body? Like other inflammation/immune type problems?
