I've done the Ovidrel trigger before, no big deal. The Follistim was also no big deal. But the Menopur. . .oh dearie me! It hurt so bad. The needles are all the same size, so I don't get it, not sure why it hurt. But it is torture!!

When I used Gonal-f it wasn't so bad, it didn't burn or anything at all. But my Bravelle burned like heck! It hurt bad, I had to find ways to manage it. I don't know if it's different because of being synthetic versus not, the difference of just FSH and having FSH with LH, etc... but it certainly is different.
For me it was the burning/stinging that really bothered me... my needle was slightly bigger, but even if it had been the same size, I'm sure it would have been just as bad.
So, to cope I inject very, very, slowly... and only after being thoroughly iced beforehand. I also ice the area a bit after and rub it to help disperse the meds and such. I've heard of some women using a hot water bottle afterward, instead of ice though. Haven't tried it personally though.

I'll have to try to ice the area tomorrow night. Good idea! I didn't think about it. It was extremely uncomfortable.

Wifey - What did your RE say about why he/she wanted you to take Menopur? I'm trying to find out more about it so I can figure out if I should try to get my RE to think about putting me on it.

Athletic Cyster, I was supposed to start Follistim by itself last cycle. I had a cyst producing high estrogen. But on top of that, I had high FSH, not a good thing. So my RE is concerned that I may have a diminishing number of eggs. High FSH is usually a sign of diminished ovarian reserve. So in order to get the best number and quality of eggs, he wanted to use more than just an FSH product. But I seriously am not a fan so far of the Menopur. It just burns going in. The needle itself isn't bad, it's the solution going in that hurts. I don't know. . .maybe it will get better with time.

I'm so sorry! I thought the Repronex injections stung a little going in so I tried the ice but that does more for the actual needle stick than it does for the burning of the solution you are injecting. I wish I had something better to tell you!!

I'm hoping it gets better as I get used to it. It was very uncomfortable last night. The needle was really no big deal, but I had to go very slow with injecting the solution. Yikes is all I can say.

Hi Girls - sorry for those that have trouble with Menopur. I had no trouble with it, but I really have a high tolerance for pain. I want to echo the pp and say that icing is a big help. I don't always do it, but it is a help.
I did notice with Menopur that the needs that it comes with it is hard do push it in, like a lot of pressure did you all notice that. With the other shots I took it was a light tap and Menopur was a hard push.
For me they explained the difference with the Menopur was it contains LH and LH can really help out the quality of the eggs. I think they can measure your bodies natural LH and determine if they want to use a LH containing stim. It did IVF and Menopur and Repronex are usually supplemented!
WifeyC I wish you the best of luck. In TTC buddies we have a Injectable Buddies thread...A lot of us have been through it a bunch of times - I'm an IVFer now, but we are supportive and have lots of perspective!

I had heard of others saying menopur stings but for me it felt no different than bravelle, which also didn't hurt. By the time I got to menopur though I had learned to inject nice and slow... I think that is the key. I don't know how the ones that come in the pens work, if they go slow on their own or what, but when you hold the controls I think the urge to to get it over with fast - and that hurts. SLOW.
I also used to keep my meds in the fridge and found if they were cold it hurt more.

The Follistim pen is fine if you inject it quickly. I did the Menopur very slowly, but I think that just made it worse. But like I said, I'm hoping that the more I do, the more I will get used to it. I hope, anyway.
