Default HOMESTUDY questions

Hi everyone.

We are just beginning the adoption process. I have so many questions....don't even know where to begin. A question that's up there on my list is: Can you get a homestudy done from one agency, and then adopt from a different agency? The reason I'm wondering is that I thought maybe we could get the ball rolling on that since it takes awhile and then we could decide later on the avenue, whether we use an agency, lawyers, etc.. That way I could do more research on the different adoption avenues.

Also I was wondering how long is a homestudy good for? What if it takes too long to find a child? Is it as long to update as it is the first time going through it?

I'm sorry I have so many questions. I feel so overwhelmed and dumb!

I'm not sure about your first question--that may be an agency by agency ruling. I would think so anyway but I"m not sure.

As for how long your homestudy is valid--that's actually a state by state ruling. I know here in MA our homestudy is good for one year. After the year mark we had to do a homestudy update which was basically just one more meeting with the s/w to ensure everything was still the same and/or to update her with any changes.

Here I sit...preparing (???) for our homestudy visit tomorrow for our second adoption! I say "preparing???" because there isn't much to do--we are much more relaxed this time around! lol

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress!

some agencies make you do a homestudy through them and won't accept a homestudy from anyone else. I would definately narrow your choices down and call them and ask what they will accept. I think ours is good for a year or so... But our foster care liscense is good for like 4 years. If you don't find a child in that amount of time the homestudy is good for they usually just update it and make it good for so much longer.
HTH Good Luck!

Thanks ladies for your fast replies! Your info made things make alittle more sense! I can't believe how many options there are out there. I've been checking alittle into Catholic Charities. I've also received some info on "Abby's One True Gift" in Iowa. We'll just have to collect all the info we can and then decide from there. Does anyone know if you try to stick with the same agency or how long you should give them to place a child?

I have one more question.....does it cost anything to update your homestudy?

I'm sorry I have so many questions....my mind is just racing! TIA sara

Thanks Krystal......I will just have to do some checking now. I think I'm just scared to jump in and get my feet wet. Most of my family and friends have no idea we've had IF issues. I'm not sure how to deal with all the "questions" from the nosy family members. That's partly why we didn't tell them about TTC.....and that I can't stand pity! No one needs to feel sorry for us.

ok sorry i got off the topic alittle with family stuff....lol!! thanks for all your help! sara

I think it does matter what state you are in. I'm in Ohio and our homestudies are good for 2 years and then can be updated after that. If you needed it still after 4 years (initial homestudy and then one update), they must complete a new homestudy. We adopted in Florida and the agency there accepted our Ohio homestudy. In Florida, homestudies are only good for one year so we had to have ours updated. Hope it helps you...good luck.
