Hi Ladies!!! My husband and I recently decided to start the adoption process while we are trying to conceive. We realized that if we waited until the beginning of next summer (when we expect to be finished with the fertility treatments we have decided on, if it doesn't work) it would be so frustrating to have spent 2 1/2 years ttc and then have to start the possibly long process of adoption. This decision is both exciting and scary. Scary in the sense that we could actually become parents after all of the waiting and hoping, as well as the possible disappointments along the way. We really aren't concerned about what child we get or not bonding or whatever, because when you have your own baby it is a bit of a crap shoot too. You don't know what kind of personality or disabilities or whatever you might end up with. But the idea of an adoption falling through is scary.
So...sorry for all the background info. My question is what is the homestudy process like? What actually happens? How can you speed it along? We are currently looking into two private agencies that take kids from the social services system (i.e. it doesn't cost $10,000-20,000). I don't know if this affects the homestudy experience other than the fact that you don't pay for it. We are very new to this process (we know people who have adopted/are adopted, but were never involved in the adoptions). Any info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
We're going thru an agency that doesnt charge anything, but you pay for your own lawyer fees. They also pull from the DSHS. We have one visit that is coming up soon for the agency then we have to go thru a different agency for our foster license.
So our homestudy is basically them coming out making sure you have room for a child, asking you questions about your past, present, and future. Why you want a child, making sure your home is safe and requirements are satisfied (depending on the state you're in). Financial status (that you can take care of yourself plus a child). Its pretty painless... but I must say that my agency knows more about me than most people do! lol
Oh and they will also ask you about ttc... and what would happen if you get pregnant and have a child in your home already, if you have an unresolved issues about ttc... etc
