I have found information regarding studies that indicate that high levels of Homocysteine can cause miscarriages. I know that a lot of cysters, including myself, have high Homocysteine levels and Met can cause them to increase. Might be something to get tested for those of you who will be TTC again. Homocysteine levels seem to lower in response to vitamins B12 and Folic Acid. "They concluded that folic acid in the range of 500-5,000 µg/day reduced homocysteine by 25%, and that B12 supplements (average intake of 500 µg/day) reduced it a further 7%."
Homocysteine and Recurrent Early Pregnancy Loss
A number of retrospective, case-control studies have been performed looking at elevated homocysteine levels and recurrent first trimester pregnancy loss. Nelen et al.1 (2000) conducted a meta-analysis of the studies performed from 1992 to 1999. They found that women with elevated homocysteine levels (> 10-18.3 µmol/l) had a statistically significant, 170% greater chance of two or more pregnancy losses in the first trimester. They were not able to determine whether elevated homocysteine is a marker or a cause of the pregnancy loss.

When I was having bad nausea the doc put me on a special prenatal that was high in B vitamins and folic acid. Premisis I think. It didn't have much of anything else in it. I'll try looking and posting later if I didn't throw the box away. It might be good for a cyster that has Homocysteine to take before and after getting pregnant.

I just wanted to add that Metformin is strongly suspected to inhibit the absorption of Folic Acid. My current pg I took high dose folic acid for the first time and it is the first time I have not had ANY bleeding. The folic acid affects how the placenta is formed --- low levels of folic and high homocysteine can lead to poor blood vessel formation in the placenta.
I hope all cysters amp up their folic acid intake. Thanks for the post Mandi!
I am so glad you shared that, I take prenatals as my multi-vitamin, but now I am encouraged to add b-complex....I had been considering it, now I know I will (just in case)
Thank you for this post, my gentics dr said there must be a problem with my folic acid intake due to how many losses i have had...It didnt make sense to me at first, but now that you posed this it make much more sense, he has me on 3mg daily TTC and wants me on 5mg when pg, and i think that the B12 cant hurt either..THanks
