It's the level of free testosterone that's vitally important. Hormones are rarely a simple matter and testosterone and estrogen are closely related although each tends to counteract the effect of the other. So your testosterone levels must be read against your estrogen levels. However they must also be read against your SHBG (sex hormone binding globulin) levels, because many women have high levels of testosterone yet it has little effect because most of it is "bound" by correspondingly high levels of SHBG. The most relevant figure is that for "free" testosterone.
