Default Hormone levels and blood testing

Ok, I've got a question...Maybe I should post in the BCP thread, but I never get answers when I do...

Anyway, I am on Birth control, and recently got a blood test. My question is, Does the Birth control sway the results of the hormone testing? Like, isn't BC supposed to make hormone levels 'normal'? If so, what was the point testing blood if they the levels will return normal?

I don't even want to be on BCP's anymore. I want to fix this without the aid of hormone pills...Why take them for PCOS, anyway? Does it not just 'cover the problem'?

My insulin levels are soooo high, and I NEED metformin. My gyn won't prescribe them, and my fasting insulin level 2 months ago was 27!! I can't wait to see what it is now. So, one other question is, does BCP's affect insulin levels as well? I hope not. I want to see if my body is making progress on it's own. That's what I'm really concerned about here.

I get the blood test results on Tuesday!

Looks like no one here is giving you answers either. . . . I would guess that your thinking is correct. Another guess would be that one point in testing would be to see if the BCP have helped your hormones become normal . . . if still not normal, other treatment options might be needed.

I suppose the best thing would be to ask you doc what is the point.

Since I can't give you any real answers . . . I am least giving you a bump so that maybe someone else can help you out.

I am having hormone testing done this week too and my ob/gyn instructed me to go off my BCP for 30 days prior to testing. I am on Ortho Novum 1/35. It does have a higher level of estrogen. The RE I saw also told me to go off BCP for a month before I have the testing done. I am having a basic hormonal panel done, estrogen, progest, TSH, etc. I had this panel done 10 yrs. ago and I rememer he tooke me off of the BCP at that time also.
You should question your dr. again, he may be doing a test that does not require that-although I am not aware of one.

Good Luck
