Hormone Troubles in Teens Can Lead to Infertility Fears
Hormone Troubles in Teens Can Lead to Infertility Fears
WEDNESDAY, Feb. 26 (HealthScoutNews) -- Teenage girls with menstrual problems and other hormone-related symptoms are much more concerned about their future fertility than are their healthy peers.
So says a study in the February issue of the Journal of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology.
The study adds that the teenagers with these problems and worries need more health care and counseling than they currently receive.
Researchers from the Johns Hopkins Children's Center and Harvard University surveyed 187 healthy teen girls and 97 teen girls with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). That's a common hormonal disorder and a leading cause of infertility and it affects about 5 percent to 10 percent of girls and women of childbearing age.
Symptoms of PCOS include irregular menstrual cycles, excessive body hair, acne and obesity. Besides infertility, other potential complications of PCOS include heart disease, diabetes and uterine cancer.
The study found that teenage girls with PCOS were three times more likely than other teen girls to be concerned about their future fertility. More than half the girls with PCOS reported their condition had a negative impact on their lives.
The findings indicate that counseling to address the girls' concerns may be critical to improving their quality of life.
I was 19 when I found out and was devistated.I haven't been quit the same since.I think it is important for the counsiling.I wish I knew then what I no now
I was 17 when i found out i had pcos. I have been worrying ever since i was 13 when my periods were irregular that i would not have children. I REALLY want a big family. I'm 19 now and still VERY worried!
sounds like me smushie! i've been worried since i was about 13 also, since i was always very developed for my age. And i was just diagnosed last month...so yeah, i've been very worried, even before i knew what was wrong, i was like "ok, periods are necessary to have kids...and i'm not having periods...so the logical thought from that is that i won't be able to have kids."

Leavin the site now due to new diagnosis...Thanks for all the support while I've been here!
About time someone thought how younger PCOS victims feel about not having kids!!!
I think i would only really worry when the time comes (God willing) to have children! I have a friend who is a couple of months youger then me (turned 18 about 2 months ago) and she had ovarian cancer (still dont know if its all gone yet, have to wait 5 years to be sure), she had to have her ovaries taken out and maybe other stuff, dont know, however, she has her ovaries frozen so there still could be hope for her to have kids

I'm 24 and recently asked my GYN about TTC later on...she acted like it was nothing to worry about and made a comment like, "Ohhh you might need Clomid." Ummm, shouldn't we do some tests now, as I might have a baby in the next 4 or 5 years!?!? Grrrrr

Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I've been at odds with my reproductive system since I was 13 and knew something was wrong. I was very physically mature for my age, and the last thing to come was a period. I was physically ready for a period almost a year before it actually came, but I was caught up in the media/health hoopla about irregularity in adolescent girls. I don't care what they say! I knew something was wrong! I was supposed to be menstruating but all the f**king doctors had to over rule me and made me feel invalid and inadequate.
I've always known my purpose in this life is to be a mother. I've always felt so hopeless and helpless and had no where to turn or someone to confide in. Now I have several others who are just like me and think/feel the same way, too! Thank you ladies for being outspoken about a WORTHY CAUSE! We DO deserve a doctor who will listen to us and treat us like we matter and that our concerns are LIGITIMATE!
That's all for now.

meds: spironolactone, ortho-tri-cyclen, lithobid, seroquel and effexor
You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I'll rise.

thats exactly what i felt wehn i first found this place. isnt it amazing?
When I was younger I always said I wanted 5 kids. I havent been diagnosed yet with PCOS but I'm almost positive I have it. After reading about it, I'm so worried about being infertile because I really want to be a mom when I'm older.

Oh! Don't give up yet.
Lots of ladies with PCOS conceive naturally. Even if you are getting help from Clomid or one of the other meds. You are still getting pregnant.
Sure, lets be realistic - there is a good chance that you will have trouble. But don't give up until you have tried.
