Exclamation Horrible experience! Metformin 2 blame?

I have been on metformin for most of the past 5 to 6 years... I had found that Met XR worked better for me... anyhow... I had gone off metformin recently (MC)...and didn't want 2 have to go thru that and have to deal with the Bad GI effects i was having from met... anyhow...

A coupla weeks ago, I went back on it, cause, well one, it makes me feel better and a lot of the horrible PCOS probs go away...and two, well, I would like to slowly work my way back up on it and be ready for when we TTC again...

Well, it seems that this time... the side effects (mostly GI)were worse than they've ever been... i hadn't changed my diet drastically since the last time... and then I developed a new very painful side effect... I went to a restaurant to eat out with my family, i hadnt eaten yet, and had this sharp twisting pain in my lower right abdomen... and had a strong urge to use the bathroom...so i practically staggered in the restroom when i could get up from the table... i was panicked! i went to bathroom... where the pain got worse and worse... i was ready to dial 911 and have the ambulance get me from there(the toilet!)... that idea was too embarrassing... so i stayed there til the pain passed...which it did after about 15 mins...
i had noticed this pain was dull at first when i restarted the met...and was getting worse... when it escalated to that situation... from that point on... i have STOPPED taking Met, and am scared to retry it... anyone experience that pain before? also I have read about glumetza? does anyone know anything about that? i read its suppose to be easier on the GI than Met... but cant be taken during pg... after that last episode... i began to wonder what my options might be....???

Hey there. I would definitely talk to your doctor about that pain. Sounds awful! I have been on metformin for 5 days now. I also suffer from inflammatory bowel disease (lucky me) so we wondered if I would be able to tolerate metformin. I have had a few mild cramps but have felt pretty fine. I suspect this is because I generally avoid, wheat, dairy, coffee and alcohol (its taken me years to acclimatise to this). I wonder if these inflammatory foods set off the symptoms in people who take metformin? Just a theory!

The first time I tried met I would be in the bathrom about 4 hours after taking it. If I ate salad, eggs, or anything greasy I would be in there before that.

I stopped met for awhile and have recently started back-a week today- and I don't have the need to go like before.
