Default Hoshimotos disease

I was just diagnosed with Hoshimotos disease. I have no idea what it is. Do any of you have it? What meds are you on for it? could it be the reason for my recurrent miscarriages? Any info would be very helpful. Thanks all!

Hashimoto's is an auto-immune system disorder. Basically, your immune system is creating antibodies which are attacking your thyroid gland. Since your thyroid gland is not producing enough hormones, your pituitary gland is sending out TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) in an effort to get your thyroid gland to produce the hormones.

Hypothyroidism is typically managed with a tiny pill taken daily: Levothyroxine is a synthetic hormone (such as Synthroid) or there is Armour (which is dessicated animal hormone). Some people take another pill along with levothyroxine such as Cytomel which is used for those who don't convert the levo enough. You can google all of this for more info. I could type for hours.

I've read that miscarriages can result from a high TSH level and/or from the thyroglobulin antibodies. Most doctors advise conceiving *after* your TSH gets to around 1.0.

Since you were dx'ed with Hashimoto's, I assume your doctor checked your thyroid antibody levels. Do you know what your TSH level is? Also, did your Dr. Rx anything?

Oh, also...a lot of cysters have hypothyroidism.

I did not get the TSH Level. He wants to see me in 2 weeks cause he is out of town so I will ask him then. I was pregnant last month and during week 7 they found that I had a hypothyroid so they prescribed Levo at 50mcg a day. I miscarried 4 days later. I was just tested by another doctor last week, after a month of Levo and things are still not looking good. He was the one who tested for the antibodies not my stupid OB that was supposed to help me keep this last baby. I really think doctors should know this kind of stuff before they give a person clomid and have them loose the baby cause they were to lazy to take blood.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

In case your dr didn't tell you, take your levo on an empty stomach with water only. Don't eat anything for at least an hour and don't take other medicine/vitamins within 2-4 hours after you take it.

You may always want to get a copy of your lab results so you can keep up with your TSH level. TTC again when it gets to around 1.0...definitely under 2.0 for optimal chance of carrying the baby to term.

Also, just because you have Hashimoto's doesn't automatically mean that's the reason you mc. It could have been numerous other things. I know you probably know this...I'm just saying. Your doctor definitely should have run a thyroid panel *if* there are others in your family with thyroid problems. It's one of those silent diseases that a good doctor catches instead of trying to treat each symptom.

Best wishes!

I also have it! I take synthroid everyday. It has very little side effects. As you doctor placed you medicine, it is possible you had the miscarriage because your thryroid levels were off, but the medicine would not have caused the miscarriage.
